Students Quench a Thirst for Water (2/2)
Engineers Without Borders brings water to a remote Honduran village
Hard work (03'45''-04'50'')
While the water system in Terreritos is not yet finished, the students completed the most difficult elements during their two-week visit, when they weren’t 1 scorpions or playing soccer with villagers.
The mountain spring is three miles away from the village, a route that includes three plunging 2 . The students first cleared rocks and mud with pickaxes and shovels to expose the spring. Then they made a concrete box to collect the water that bubbled forth, and built concrete pillars to support the pipes over the first, and deepest, ravine.
Students also helped dig trenches for the 3 of white PVC pipe, though villagers are doing most of the digging. So far, pipe has been laid along the trickiest part, the initial two-thirds of a mile.
The residents of Terreitos hope to install the rest by this fall. Even then, the total water flow will be a relative trickle by U.S. standards, perhaps 11 gallons per minute.
Local cooperation (15'55"-16'50")
The villagers’ cooperation has been 4 . When first approached by a Honduran non-profit group about the water system, they held community meetings and agreed to contribute both muscle and money. Each family donates the equivalent of $1 a month. A typical wage earner makes just $ 3 a day.
“These people have less than the poorest of the poorest people in the United States,” says Ellis Lanaux, a New Orleans resident who will be a junior next year. “They’re not 5 .”
But they could use a little more water. And when the villagers finish the task begun by their young friends from Philadelphia—by laying the pipeline along the remaining two miles or so— they’re going to get it.
