A Taste of Home (3/3)
To food lovers, the Vancouver area is a gastronomic paradise of curries, dim sums, seafood and French cuisine
Asian-style night market in suburban Vancouver (01'55''-02'25'')
Vancouver may have the largest Chinatown in Canada, but at night, from mid-May to October, the hustle-and-bustle moves to the suburbs. The Richmond Night Market, with about 400 booths on a 9-acre site at the edge of town, is a shopping-and-eating 1 , modeled after the street markets in China, Malaysia and other Asian localities.
A melting pot of Asian markets (07'45''-08'40'')
Vietnamese CDs, Chinese-embroidered silk purses, Samurai swords---everything imaginable is for sale. From cell phone accessories to jewelry, 2 teas to sweaters for puppies, prices range from $5 to $25. Vendors and customers haggle in Korean, Thai, Mandarin and Cantonese. And like all Asian markets, designer knockoffs are everywhere.
But the main attraction is a 65-stall food court. On offer: shrimp dumplings and oyster cakes for a taste of China, fresh sugarcane juice that’s the rage in street markets in Vietnam. Or enjoy the addictive chidken-courry puffs made by Mollie Tan at the Malaysian stall, where the pastries often sell out before many market-goers can even park their cars.
East meets West (18'15''-19'20'')
There is a 3 element involved for Asian-born diners, said Raymond Cheung, who oversees the market. The earthy tastes and pungent odors are reminiscent of the pushcart fare found in their native lands.
Cheung, 31, started the night market seven years ago. It has grown beyond expectations to become a major family event, teen hangout and tourist attraction. The Richmond market now 4 Vancouver’s night market, only 30 minutes away. Cheung boasts the market drew as many as 30,000 on some nights in 2005.
Not one to sit still, Cheung envisions a grander spectacle: a carnival-like atmosphere, a Westernized festival with more games, rides and performances. “Sort of an East-meets-West thing,” he said. But at its heart, he added, this will remain an Asian market, with its 5 street-vendor style.
