The pilot who safely ditched an airliner in a river in New York 10 days ago has been welcomed by cheering crowds in his hometown in California. Thousands of people watched the pilot , Chesley Sullenberger , receive a key to the Town (town) of Danville. In his first public remark (remarks) since the emergency landing in which all 155 passengers and crew survived. (,) Mr Sullenberger played down the achievement.
" Circumstance determined that it was this experienced crew that was scheduled to the flight, (fly) that particular flight on that particular day. But I know I can speak for the entire crew, and I tell you , we were simply doing the jobs we were trained to do. " You're listening to World News from the BBC.
Fierce storms across Southern (southern) France and Northern (northern) Spain have left at least 15 people dead and caused wide-spread (widespread) damage. Four (4) children died when strong winds blew down the (a) shelter of the sport (at a sports) centre near the city of Barcelona. Elsewhere people were killed by falling trees and buildings. The winds also brought down power cables, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without electricity.
