The issue was very much on the President's mind during talks in Germany Wednesday with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"All options are on the table, and my first choice is to solve this diplomatically, and the best way to solve it diplomatically is to work with our partners. "

Speaking through an interpreter Chancellor Merkel said diplomatic pressure has produced results, but she noted that new sanctions will be necessary if Iran fails to stop enriching uranium .

3. Pakistan's government has launched a strong protest with the United States over an airstrike that killed 11 Pakistani soldiers at a checkpoint along the Afghan border. Details about Tuesday's incident are still not clear. U.S. military spokesman Lt. "We've maintained a positive identification of the enemy, calls air support or then used by coalition forces against fire superiority until the threat was eliminated. "

U.S. officials said the operation was coordinated beforehand with Pakistan. A pakistani army spokesman called the U.S. airstrike, an unprovoked and covertly act. U.S. Defense department spokesman Geoff Morrell Wednesday defended the airstrike, saying it was a legitimate act against forces that attack coalition troops.

"We are looking into this with Pakistanis to find out what exactly happened. But as I said for the third or fourth or fifth time now, every indication we have at this stages that it was a legitimate strike in self-defense."

An U.S. state department spokesman called the incident regrettable.
