During barely six moths in Vancouver, a beautiful west coast city in Canada, I have seen lots of gorgeous western coast sceneries, have experienced pretty much what we have always called as “Culture Shock,” and once have had hard time in adjusting to the North American educational system. Within this half a year, I have kept observing, comparing, and thinking the differences of culture, education, values people maintain between Canada and China fairly much, and I have discovered and am still discovering something either precious or unexpected…
On getting off from the plane and out of the airport, such a clean and pure blue sky I have never seen attracts me, the wholesome fresh air I have never breathed before flows into my nose. The whole piece of lawn is so green and probably because of the wet air, I cannot even see much dust on the sidewalk. Except in the district of downtown Vancouver, there are no high-rises but only arrayed houses with two or three stores. I was really amazed and shocked at that time. Then along the driving way to the university, I have seen the sea, pure blue again, which matches so nicely with the grey high mountain still having some bits of white snow. How neat if every city in China can have the same clean air and blue sky!
In Vancouver, except tourist’s resorts including different mountains, beaches, the most favorite place local people are inclined to go is the pub. You will find almost everyone is talkative and exciting in the pub, which, as we all know, is the typical western way of having fun. Local people are also crazy for sports, say curling, soccer, snowboarding etc., and various outdoor activities. Like in most North American cities, hockey is people’s favorite sport in Vancouver. Especially during May time, the whole city becomes crazy for hockey. During weekend or holidays seasons, the family or the couple like going for camping, and some of them even do so every month. The family needs to buy a pick-up truck to hook up with and pull over the motor home in which the room can be precisely like a luxury apartment, where kitchen, living room, and bedroom are all included. Then the whole family can hang out together and stay outside resorts barbequing, talking, dancing etc. for several days. Aha, but make sure that you are not allergic to bugs; otherwise your fun there would suffer a huge discount! Being enthusiastic for outdoor activities, this is I will strongly suggest for people back home, especially students and young worker who are always stressed out. Find a sunny and nice weekend, and go hiking or mountain climbing or any kind of recreational sports with a bunch of friends will definitely infuse you with unexpected energy and relaxation. Just go for it and have fun!
