South Korea says it's planning new measures to tackle its high suicide rate. Officials say they will build more screen doors on station platforms to stop people jumping under trains. Here is Steve Jackson from our Asia-Pacific desk.

South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the developed world, worse even than Japan, and the problem is seen by many as a national disgrace. So the government has been working on a strategy involving 10 separate departments. Full details will be revealed next week, but the officials say there will be a mixture of practical measures to prevent people killing themselves and a deeper effort to tackle the causes of suicide. There will be tighter regulations to control the sale of pesticides and other poisons. Internet sites that encourage suicide will be blocked, and welfare support will be improved for people suffering severe financial hardship.

The Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is being hailed in his homeland for saving a television crew from a marauding tiger. Mr Putin and the TV crew were in a wildlife reserve in the Russian Far East when a trapped Siberian tiger escaped and leapt towards them. Russian reports said he shot the tiger with a tranquilizer gun. The TV crew's director called it a miracle escape.
