In a separate development, the Election Commission in Thailand has found Mr. Samak's People Power Party guilty of electoral fraud and called for it to be dissolved. The commission ruled that the party had bought votes in national elections last December when they won the largest number of seats.

The Secretary General of Japan's governing Liberal Democratic Party Taro Aso has indicated that he plans to run for the Prime Minister's job, following the resignation of Yasuo Fukuda. Mr. Aso has been widely seen as a possible successor for the top job since he was promoted a month ago in a reshuffle of the Japanese cabinet. Yasuo Fukuda announced his surprise resignation on Monday after less than a year in office. From Tokyo, Chris Hogg reports.

MPs and party members will vote for a new leader before the end of the month. The LDP strengthening parliament means whoever is chosen will become Prime Minister. They'll have 12 months before they have to call the general election, but they'll face pressure to seek a new electoral mandate much sooner. The former Foreign Minister Taro Aso is already staking his claim to the job, telling reporters he has the qualifications to carry on when Mr. Fukuda left off.
