我会在二楼给出对各位筒子练习的评点，同时针对大家练习中出现的语法弱点进行第二天的复习。练习完毕后，请去NCE3小组更正错误以及讨论^^

ahu参加宝宝大赛以来，第一次坚持自学新概念这么久（整整20课啊55）。现在虽然宝宝爬行比赛结束了，但是宝宝不能一辈子都爬滴，宝宝的成长是不能忽视滴，所以21课以后的内容还是要继续滴。

Ahu的主持风格大概跟以前主持不一样，不过好歹也是原创。【大家慢慢适应，吐啊吐啊就习惯了^.^】课文中这种方括号大概会出现很多【没准哪天大家的名字也会出现其中】，主要是为了调节气氛活跃大脑加深印象，喜欢的筒子们举手欢迎下，不喜欢的就举脚唾弃下或者跳过。总之两个字：“无论什么方法，学习了消化了就是自己的了^.^”【众人的臭鸡蛋烂番茄＋板砖纷纷扔上台：这是两个字嘛？不会数数就下去！】
言归正传，课文开始：

We often read in novels how a seemingly respectable person or family has some terrible secret which has been concealed from strangers for years. The English language possesses a vivid saying to describe this sort of situation. The terrible secret is called ‘a skeleton in the cupboard’. At some dramatic moment in the story, the terrible secret becomes known and a reputation is ruined. The reader's hair stands on end when he reads in the final pages of the novel that the heroine, a dear old lady who had always been so kind to everybody, had, in her youth, poisoned every one of her five husbands.

It is all very well for such things to occur in fiction. To varying degrees, we all have secrets which we do not want even our closest friends to learn, but few of us have skeletons in the cupboard. The only person I know who has a skeleton in the cupboard is George Carlton, and he is very proud of the fact. George studied medicine in his youth. Instead of becoming a doctor, however, he became a successful writer of detective stories. I once spent an uncomfortable weekend which I shall never forget at his house. George showed me to the guestroom which, he said, was rarely used. He told me to unpack my things and then come down to dinner. After I had stacked my shirts and underclothes in two empty drawers, I decided to hang one of the two suits I had brought with me in the cupboard. I opened the cupboard door and then stood in front of it petrified. A skeleton was dangling before my eyes. The sudden movement of the door made it sway slightly and it gave me the impression that it was about to leap out at me. Dropping my suit, I dashed downstairs to tell George. This was worse than ‘a terrible secret’; this was a real skeleton! But George was unsympathetic. ‘Oh, that, ’ he said with a smile as if he were talking about an old friend. ‘That's Sebastian. respectable(adj.) 体面的, 受尊重的
She is a respectable young woman from a seemingly good family.
We should be respectful of other cultures.

conceal(v.)：隐藏
Do you have any secret which you would conceal forever? 【“我头上一只角，我身后有尾巴；谁也不知道，我有多少秘密～～就不告诉你告诉你告诉你，就不告诉你告诉你。。”谁知道此歌出处奖励红包哈^^】

3、After I had stacked my shirts..
stack(v.): 码放整齐
The student was stacking up the books while his younger sister knocked. 【可怜的学生，哪里是码书，明明是啃书。。】

以后用谚语就可以用这个句型哦～

5、..the terrible secret becomes known and a reputation is ruined.
ruin, destroy, damage三者，destroy是完全滴毁灭，ruin和damage的毁坏则还有点希望修复。
The city was destroyed by the earthquake. 【大家还记得庞贝嘛。。不过或许正是因为被永久地毁灭了，所以庞贝的传说才显得那样吸引人。】

6、After I had stacked my shirts and underclothes in two empty drawers, I decided to hang one of the two suits I had brought with me in the cupboard.
这样是不是更好：After having stacked my shirts and underclothes in two empty drawers, I decided to hang one of the two suits I had brought with me in the cupboard.
比较：Dropping my suit, I dashed downstairs to tell George.

7、George studied medicine in his youth.
in sb’s youth, 年轻的时候
She was so beautiful in her youth that many people were chasing her.【取舍之间，愿意年轻还是愿意美丽？我愿意年轻的时候美丽，年老的时候回忆^^】

8、.. and then stood in front of it petrified.
petrify(v.): 惊呆，使惊呆
stand这里是系动词，做表语。
She opened the door and then stood in front of a wolfhound petrified. 她打开门，看到一只狼狗在跟前，呆了～～【她打开门，看到一只帅哥在跟前，呆了。。看起来那帅哥好像就要扑到她身上一样(look as if)。。补充作业，咔咔。。】

9、..it gave me the impression that it was about to leap out at me.
be about to do: 即将，就要
I was about to go to bed when you called me.
leap out at sb：扑向sb

It is all very well for such things to occur in fiction, but few of us have skeletons in the cupboard. 虚构小说有这样的情节是可以的，但是现实中极少有人这样做。
这里有“一方面这样是不错，但是另一方面则。。”的意思，所以it is all very well一般跟but连用。

2、To varying degrees, we all have secrets which we do not want even our closest friends to learn。
to varying degrees = to different degrees 从不同角度来说
I agree with you to a/some degree. 我在某个/某些方面赞同你。

3、Instead of becoming a doctor, however, he became a successful writer of detective stories.

今日练习(练习都是整段滴哈) ：
1、表面上在学术界他很受尊重。(seemingly, respectable)
2、其实他经常把花花公子的杂志放得整整齐齐。(stack)
3、而且即使头发吓得竖起来，他还是喜欢看恐怖电影。 (his hair stands on end)
4、他家里的不少电器都毁了。不过那都是他年轻的时候。(destroy，in his youth)
5、我们都做过不同程度疯狂的事情。(to varying degrees)
6、年轻的时候做些疯狂的事是不要紧的，但是年纪大了就不要做了。(it is all very well)
