母乳喂养

位中国女留学生访问一个英国家庭，看见婴儿床上躺着一个男婴，想问婴儿是吃妈妈的奶，还是吃牛奶，就问女主人：“Does the baby eat Mother's milk or cow's milk?”在英语中，这样将妈妈与牛相提并论，有些不雅。女主人心中不悦，但还是委婉地告诉中国学生应该换个方式提问：“Is the baby breast-fed or bottle-fed?”或“Is it breast-fed or bottle-fed?”这种曲折、含蓄的说法，是英语独特的表达方式。

　　breast原意是“胸部”，对女性就指“乳房”。像 breast cancer就是“乳腺癌”。例如：1. 这个婴儿正在吃母乳。1) The baby is at its mother's breast.2) The baby is at the breast. breast milk 是“母乳”，to breastfeed 是“母乳喂养”，是最好的婴儿喂养(infant feeding)方式。例如：2. 这位母亲正在用母乳喂养她的婴儿。1) The mother is feeding her baby with milk from her breast.2) The mother is breastfeeding her baby.另一种婴儿喂养方式是artificial feeding，即“人工喂养”，就是用cow's　milk(牛奶) 或artificial baby/infant milk(人造婴儿奶)喂养。这些都是母乳替代品。常见的人造婴儿奶是 artificial milk formula(人造配方奶)和powdered formula milk(配方奶粉)。配方奶的意思是liquid milk-like food for babies(婴儿用的像奶一样的液态食物)，是一种artificial food(人造食物)。to bottlefeed 的意思是“用奶瓶喂养”。这里的bottle(奶瓶)就是feeding bottle或milk bottle。
