1.       But the ferry was gone: Was gone也可以说成had gone. 但is gone/was gone着重表示“走掉了，看不见了，找不到了。”

2.       thanks, anyway: 当有人尽力帮你而没有帮上忙时，用此语表示感谢他的好意和努力。

3.       on the way home: 在前往某地的路上，可以说成on the way to 或on one’s way to, 如：“去办公室的路上”要说成on the way to the office.此处home 是副词，故不加介词to.
