Susan and Harry arrives in a Thai restaurant. Somsak, the owner, comes out to greet them.
Somsak: Ah! Miss Stewart! Welcome! How are you?
Susan: Fine, Somsak. And you?
Somsak: Fine, thank you.
Susan: This is my friend Harry Bennett.
Harry: Pleased to meet you.
Somsak: Very nice to meet you. Any friend of Miss Stewart's is welcome at Somsak's. Follow me, please.
Harry: (to Susan) I like it here.
Susan: I do, too. I come here often.
Somsak: A special place for special people.
Susan: Thank you, Somsak.
(Somsak walks away.)
Harry: Well! Nice restaurant.
Somsak: (Somsak returns to the table.) Would you like something to drink?
Susan: Yes, I'd like a glass of ginger ale with ice. Harry, what would you like?
Harry: Do you have a dry white wine?
Somsak: How about a California chablis?
Harry: Chablis is fine.
Somsak: What would you like to eat?
Susan: I'd like the mee krob. －－－1－－－
Hurry: No, it's Ok. I'll have the mee krob also. (to Susan) What is it?
Susan: Crispy fried noodles. I love them.
Somsak: May I bring you a salad?
Susan: Oh yes. －－－2－－－
Somsak: I recommend rose-petal salad. Special for new friends.
Susuan: Rose-petal salad?
Hurry: Why not?
Somsak: I'll take care of everything. (He leaves.)
注释：
1． At Somsak’s：人名后加上’s，表示某人的住所或经营的商店。某职业名后加’s表示该职业的营业场所，如：the grocer’s副食店，the butcher’s 肉店，the barber’s/the hairdresser’s [男/女]理发店，the baker’s面包店，等等。
2． Follow me, please.为人领路时的用语。请人先行则说After you.
3． A special place for special people. Somsak这是恭维Susan他们，说他们有眼光，所以Susan答以Thank you。送礼物给人时你可以套用这一结构。
4． Would you like something to drink? = Do you want something to drink?问对方是否要喝点什么，这两种方法都可以用。不过，如果重点在于问对方的意愿，两种问法都可以，而如果重点在于邀请，用第一种用法。
5． Do you have a dry white wine? Wine本为不可数名词，这里指某一品牌的酒，故可以说成a wine。 A white wine不是白酒而是白色的葡萄酒。中文的“白酒”在英文中叫alcohol或spirits。Dry white wine为不带甜味的白葡萄酒。
6． How about a California chablis? How about…?用于提议，意同what about…？
7． May I bring you a salad? May I bring you…?是侍者主动推荐菜肴时的常用语。更为简短的说法是how about…?若客人问有什么好菜，侍者往往说：I recommend…,我推荐…。
8． Why not?觉得对方的提议不错，表示赞同就说why not?或yes, let’s。
9． I’ll take care of everything. = I’ll get everything for you. 一切都交给我好了。
