Nation may face labor shortage in 2010
The supply of low-cost labor, widely considered to be fueling China's sizzling economy, could start drying up as early as 2010, a report warns.
One of the biggest reasons for the potential shortage is that the rural labor force may not be as large as previously thought, the report, issued by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Thursday, says.
"China is moving from an era of labor surplus into an era of labor shortage," the
report cautions.
One of the architects of the report, however, said it doesn't necessarily mean the country will lose the advantage it enjoys in the international market because of its labor-intensive products.
Experts believe the turning point, when the new labor force will fail to meet demand, could be as close as three years. This will trigger a general increase in wages, the report says.
Rising labor costs will pose the question: how long can China rely on its "population bonus". Some foreign investors have already moved their businesses to countries with lower labor costs, Wang Yiming, deputy director of the Academy of Macroeconomic Research, under the National Development and Research Commission, wrote in a column published on Wednesday.

But hundreds of people stage protests in Paris and in other cities and riot police use tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowds. In reaction to his victory, leaders in Brussels and Washington were among the first to congratulate him. The president of the European Union José Manuel Barroso said Mr. Sarkozay would provide a driving force for reform in the European Union.

China mulls new curbs on realtors

BEIJING -- A new banking regulation may force land developers to finish projects and sell vacant holdings by keeping track of the funds they raise from pre-sales, say sources with the Ministry of Construction.

The developers could be required to open special bank accounts where funds from all pre-sales must be deposited and then only be used to finish the project.

Many Chinese realtors sell units in their unfinished buildings but instead of using the funds to complete construction they plough them into new projects. This has caused some developers to suffer serious cash flow problems forcing them to abandon unfinished buildings and leaving purchasers with nothing to show for their investment.

The new measure will also allow authorities to track the sale of apartments, ensuring that all of them have been put on the market. Some developers have been accused of hoarding empty units in order to tighten supply and force prices up.

Developers are currently not allowed to pre-sell units in new buildings until the roof is on. The authorities know that a large number of realtors ignore the rule and presell under the table.

The spread of malaria is like a two-way street. The disease is spread to humans through the bite of mosquitoes infected with malaria parasites, the most dangerous of these being plasmodium falciparum. Uninfected mosquitoes become infected with the parasite by biting infected animals.

In sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia an estimated 300 million people are infected every year, more than one million of them are children, many of whom die. Years of attempting to cure the disease with antibiotics and quinine drugs have caused the parasite to become resistant to treatment.

Scientists are trying to come up with novel strategies for conquering malaria. One idea that has been around for a number of years is the creation of genetically altered mosquitoes that could be released into the environment.

The so-called transgenic insects would be resistant to infection by falciparum. Through breeding, the altered insects would gradually replace the population of mosquitoes capable of becoming infected with the parasite.

"It's almost a perfect storm if you are a homeowner who is in distress right now. Because you are seeing housing values go down in parts of the country, so the house might not be worth what you paid for it."
The Foleys are among the thousands of homeowners on the brink of losing their homes. The couple refinanced at a low interest rate to free up money for medical bills. But when interest rates went up, Marilou Foley says, their $1,700 monthly payment doubled. "I've been packing, because I'm waiting any minute to get the bad news."
Analysts say during the housing boom when interest rates were low, borrowing by homeowners with little cash and poor credit more than tripled between the years 2000 and 2006.

From pomegranate to blueberry, fruit-based drinks have become the latest must-haves in the burgeoning market for healthy foods.

With sales worth 3 billion a year, the increasingly exotic drinks have become a firm favourite in the nation’s shopping baskets, claiming to be packed with health-giving antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Britons now consume 2.2 billion litres of juice drinks each year – equivelant to about 36 litres per person.

Now an analysis of the health properties of different juices found on supermarket shelves reveals that many of them really do contain what they claim to, and some may even help to combat chronic disease.

Drinking purple grape, cranberry, apple and grapefruit juices regularly will provide more potential health benefits than the traditional glass of orange juice with breakfast, the study found. Such varieties contain particularly high levels of compounds that can protect against chronic diseases, researchers from the University of Glasgow say
