From pomegranate to blueberry, fruit-based drinks have become the latest must-haves in the burgeoning market for healthy foods.

With sales worth 3 billion a year, the increasingly exotic drinks have become a firm favourite in the nation’s shopping baskets, claiming to be packed with health-giving antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Britons now consume 2.2 billion litres of juice drinks each year – equivelant to about 36 litres per person.

Now an analysis of the health properties of different juices found on supermarket shelves reveals that many of them really do contain what they claim to, and some may even help to combat chronic disease.
