He's Coming!

Let's Find Out
Why are they cleaning the house?

Conversation A
(Sally, Sue and Emily are cleaning up the living room.
Sue: Hurry! He'll be here any minute.
Sally: Oh, Sue. He said he'd come around 8 p.m. It's only 7:30 now.
Sue: But he may be early.  And I want everything to be perfect for our first guest.
Emily: What should I do next, Mom?
Sue: Let me look at my list. Uh . . .
Sally: Well, the next thing on my list is to sit down and rest.
Sue: You can't! We don't have time.

Conversation B
Sally: Having a bed and breakfast should be fun. When does the fun start?
Emily: When the guest comes, I hope!
Sue: No, that's when the work really begins!
Sally: Why did I let you talk me into this? I have enough to do at the ice cream shop.
Sue: It was your idea to start a bed and breakfast, Sally.
Sally: My idea? It was your idea!
  (doorbell rings)
Emily: Hello! There's someone at the door.

Conversation C
Sally: I'll get it! (She opens the door.) Hello! Are you Mr. Tripp?
Man: Yes, I am. But please call me Tony.
Sally: I'm Sally. Come on in. Welcome to the Nelson House Bed and Breakfast.
Tony: Thank you. This is a very nice place.
Sally: We like it. Tony, this is my sister Sue and my niece Emily.
Tony: Nice to meet you.
Sue: Nice to meet you, too.

Learning About Tony
Let's Find Out
Why is Tony moving to town?

Conversation A
Sue: Let me show you to your room. Then please come out and have a cup of tea with us.
Tony: Thank you, I will.
Sue: Follow me. Your room is this way.
 (They go down the hall.)
Sally: Well, Emily, we're now a bed and breakfast. There goes our first guest.
Emily: I hope this is going to be fun. Mom is certainly uptight.
Sally: That's your mom.
Emily: I know. She just wants everything to be perfect.

Conversation B
(Later, drinking tea in the living room)
Sally: Well, Tony, tell us about yourself. Are you going to be in town long?
Tony: Yes. I'm planning to move here.
Sally: You are! What are you going to do?
Tony: I'm going to start a new business.
Sue: Really? What kind of business?
Tony: A travel agency.
Sally: That sounds like an interesting business.

Conversation C
Emily: Have you traveled a lot?
Tony: I've been a few places.
Emily: Have you been to Europe?
Tony: Of course! There's nothing I like more than traveling.
Emily: Oh, I really want to take a trip to Paris. What was it like? Was it really exciting?
Tony: Uh, well, I don't know. I haven't been to Paris yet. But I've read all about it.
Emily: So have I. But reading about a place isn't the same as going there.

Town Businesses
Let's Find Out
Where will Tony's travel agency be?

Conversation A
Sue: Where will your travel agency be?
Tony: Downtown near a store called Handy Andy's.
Sally: Oh! You'll be where the hotel used to be! That's near the ice cream shop, too.
Tony: That's right.
Sally: Well, you'll have to stop in the ice cream shop sometimes. That's my business.
Sue: And Handy Andy is a very good friend of ours. I think you'll like him a lot.
Tony: That's why I like small towns. Everyone is so friendly.

Conversation B
Tony: Have you been running your bed and breakfast a long time?
Sue: Uh, well, no. You're our first guest.
Tony: Really! Why did you start a B&B?
Sally: We have a big old house. And Sue wanted to start a business, too.
Sue: I thought the town needed one. A lot of tourists come to visit the mountains near here.
Sally: And besides, we like to meet new people.

Conversation C
Emily: Do you have any kids?
Sue: Emily! That's not polite.
Tony: That's OK. Yes, I have three children. And a wife, too, of course. They'll move here as soon as I can find  a place to live.
Emily: How old are your kids?
Tony: John is 11, Debbie is 8 and Krista is 6.
Emily: Cool. I can show them around town.
Tony: I'm sure they'd like that.

Helping Tony
Let's Find Out
What will Sally and Sue do tomorrow night?

Conversation A
Tony: Well, it's getting late. I think I'll go to my room, unpack and hit the hay.
Sue: Oh, yes, of course.
Emily: And I'd better go and do my homework.
Sue: Your homework! I forgot to remind you to do it!
Emily: That's OK, Mom. I remembered. (She leaves.)
Sally: Well, good-night. When would you like breakfast?
Tony: Oh, about 8 would be great.
Sally: That's when it will be, then.
  (Tony goes down the hall.)

Conversation B
Sue: Well, he's very nice.
Sally: How long did he say he'd stay with us?
Sue: A week. He hopes to find a place to live by then.
Sally: We can help him.
Sue: Maybe he doesn't want any help.
Sally: Of course he'll want help. We know this town a lot better than he does.
Sue: Well, you can ask him in the morning.
Sally: By the way, what's for breakfast?
Sue: It's up to you. You're cooking!

Conversation C
Sally: And we should introduce him to some people in town.
Sue: Let's start with Handy Andy.
Sally: Good idea. We can invite him over for dessert tomorrow night.
Sue: I'll do that.
Sally: I hope he can come.
Sue: He'll come. I'll tell him I made an apple pie. That's his favorite.
Sally: I think Tony will like him.
Sue: I think so, too. I just hope Andy doesn't say anything wrong.
Sally: You know Andy. He will!

Andy Is Handy

Let's Find Out
What doesn't Andy like to do?

Conversation A
(The next evening, the doorbell rings. Sue and Sally are in the kitchen.)
Sally: That must be Andy. I'll get it. (She goes to the door.) Come on in!
Andy: Thanks for inviting me over. Mmmm, that pie smells great.
Sally: Well, sit down in the living room and I'll get you a piece.
Sue: No you won't. We have to wait for Tony.
Andy: Who's Tony?
Sue: Tony Tripp is our first guest. And he's going to start a business here in town.

Conversation B
(Tony comes into the living room.)
Sally: Tony, I'd like you to meet Handy Andy.
  (Tony and Andy shake hands.)
Andy: Nice to meet you.
Tony: Nice to meet you, too.
Andy: So what kind of business do you have?
Tony: I'm going to start a travel agency.
Andy: Why?
Tony: Why? Uh, because people like to travel.
Andy: I don't. And I can't understand why other people do.
Sue: Oh, dear.
Sally: What's wrong?
Sue: The faucet broke.

Conversation C
Sally: Good thing Handy Andy is here!
Andy: Let me take a look at that.
     (He goes into the kitchen.)
Sally: Andy is really nice once you get to know him. But he always says what he thinks.
Tony: I see that.
Sally: And he's very handy.
Tony: I see that, too. I think I'm glad my travel agency is near his store.
Sally: Why?
Tony: Because it's handy to be near Andy if anything breaks!
