                    Opportunity is like Dandelion

Do you believe fate?
Are you a fatalist?
Fate seems predestined, and life appears casual, coincidental.
There seem countless opportunities in your life, yet each is like a dandelion seed floating in the air past you. You may fail to notice it or you see it but hesitate for a split second. So the opportunity drifts away like the dandelion seed, carried away by the wind, forever out of sight.
“Man proposes, God disposes.”
Your refusal to a proposal is like seeing your opportunity like dandelion fly away and never return.
I remember refusing certain friends’ invitation with oft-repeated excuse or sometimes a real fact: “Sorry, I’ve already got an arrangement” or “Sorry, I’ve been too busy these days.” But later it turned out that when I was free, the friends would be busy, and there was no returning of the opportunity.
Very often we fail to value what comes to us, taking it for granted---friendship and support, help and care until it leaves us, leaves us forever like a dandelion in the air, and thus our hope will be like the moon in the water.

Love Song in Mundane World

高安 by Gao An

You know I once loved you
You know I still miss you
We agreed when parting not to weep
Why tears often wet the sleep

When breakup through tearful eyes you did see
But now do you still remember your love---me
Love stories are full of many a parting and meeting
So I am not the only under dog lamenting

A breath-taking and heart-pounding love is over
The legend mourns a history of lovers’ whisper
In the mundane world we have travelled along
For this let me sing you a love song

Aloud I say I love you
Deep in heart I keep you
In heart I keep you for long
To you I sing this very song

                               Truth in Life and Love

It was raining heavily as I drove to the college with the radio broadcasting a nostalgic song, then in the classroom, I illustrated some reading skills with a joke or two accompanied by the students’ inartificial laughter;
It was a sunlit dazing noon as I drove back home with the catkins drifting like snowflakes in the air, then the season and scene reminded me of the special emotion I had this time last year and of the article I wrote titled “When catkins come”.
Life will never repeat itself, nor will a year, a season, a month, a week, a day, a moment.
Love will never repeat itself, nor a scene, a joy, a sigh, a frown, a cheer, a hug, a breakup.
Even if life or love may repeat itself in one way or the other, it will be never the same, neither the scene nor the feeling.
In life, there is more pressure than pleasure, yet we’d learn to seek pleasure out of pressure;
In love, there is more sadness than happiness, but we’d learn to grab happiness and quit sadness.
There may be more opportunities for us to feel depressed if we often regret our mistakes;
There may be more chances for us to cry eyes out if we always recall the heart-breaking moments.
Next time when it rains heavily, I may listen to a different song;
Next time when I explain the reading skills, I may face the different students;
Next time when the catkins float, I may have the different feelings.
So the truth is that something in life or love will never repeat itself exactly as it occurred the first time.

                               A Pair of Shoes

Recently a word “capsule” has been much talked about not because of its connection with spacecraft, but because of its link with drug industry. It is supposed to contain drug, swallowed by the patient, not the one carrying astronaut to the outer space.
We often take “capsule” for granted when we get it from the hospital or drugstore because we firmly believe that it will cure the cold, fever, cough or even some more serious diseases.
But what is appalling and outrageous is the discovery that gelatin, the raw material for the capsule, in fact, comes from some useless waste leather containing much Chromium that causes cancer. So a joke is told like this:
A pair of leather shoes got lost and separated, but later met and greeted each other in a supermarket
“Oh, how come you became the jelly from children?” asked one
“My goodness! You’ve become the capsule for patients!” exclaimed the other.
Not long ago, the State Healthy Ministry banned 13 kinds of capsules, including some name brands, and a factory manufacturing contaminated gelatin was shut down, with its boss arrested.
However, we must release that money worshipping and power abuse, supervision negligence and local protectionism as well as GDP-oriented form of economic development are to blame as the root of the evil practice.
“If you catch a cold, you needn’t go to hospital. Please lick one of your shoes,” goes another joke, “If you catch a fever, you don’t have to see a doctor. Please lick another.”

                   Attitude (poem)

Wordless as friends come and go
Careless if she becomes a stranger, he, a foe
When life’s fingers splendidly paint the season green
Friendship must be generous while love, mean

Helpless as the sun sets and moon rises
Fearless if the road’s blocked by rocks of all sizes
When fate’s hands miraculously hold a lovely chin
Loyalty should be a virtue while betrayal, a sin

Probably in Winter
By Qiqin

As I bid you a farewell quietly
Please wipe the tears from the eyes’ corners softly
In long nights and the future’s uncertainty
Please weep no more for me, my honey
Though ahead there is too winding a way
For me, please smile to pray
Despite the adverse wind and falling rain
You’ll never be for a moment out of my brain
During the days without you in touch
I ought to cherish myself much
During the years you can’t reach me
You’d better learn to look after thee
You ask me when I’ll be back to hometown
I also whisper the question myself with a frown
Not now, and no exact time in the future
I think it’ll be probably in winter
Not now, and no exact time in the future
I think it’ll be probably in winter

(Notes: for those who are often away from their hometown, family and friends, I translate this old song.)

                               Great Minds

This is a sunlit warm spring afternoon with catkins blown by the breeze, drifting in the intoxicating air;
This is a music-filled cozy café with inspirations triggered by the discussion, vaporizing in the tea’s fragrance.
“Streams of consciousness” and “six-degree separation”, fortune-teller and self-fulfilling, banana peel and “Butterfly effect” as well as Amoy and the root-seeking, the topics like these naturally raised our great interest and a heated discussion that amazingly lasted for hours.
“Only by hours of continuous talk in English that engages you, can you possibly approach the gate of thinking in English and gradually gaining a fluency of the language.” I once reminded the whole class, “Because English learning is like car-driving that calls for hundreds or thousands of hours’ practicing to obtain a good sense and achieve the real skill.”
As the cups were filled with tea, minds were inspired by conception, hypothesis, and syllogism.
It was really like a saloon with foreign and Chinese friends’ participation and I felt honored as a host.
One mind can hardly be great, I thought to myself as the discussion went on, since an English proverb goes like this: “Great minds think alike.”
See, it must refer to more than one mind.
In our daily life, very often we feel our mind somewhat empty with no good ideas, inspirations inside, yet now the reason appears clear: you have no good partner to talk to and the potential of your inspirations may sleep soundly in the corner of your brain, like countless pearls buried at the bottom of seabed.
It takes two hands to make applause;
It takes two wings to have a take-off;
It takes two minds or more to achieve the greatness.
I thought as friends and I walked around a downtown park with crowds singing, groups dancing and kids running in the spring evening’s breeze.

It Happens

It happens that you hear a song that pleases your ears, and you feel in it something nostalgic, something resonating.
The fact is that you have an ear for it;
It happens that you spot a book that inspires your mind, and you find in it something unique, something entertaining.
The truth is that you have a taste for it;
It happens that you encounter someone who touches your heart, and you spot in her something graceful, something heartening.
The point is that you have a crush on her.

Love Is Hard to Tell (Lyrics)

As love is hard for me to tell
I feel as if going through hell
You ask me to put out the fire in heart
Whatever is said is wrong on my part
You tell me leaving is a relief
Trying finding my life and myself
And stop wasting time for love

But love is hard for me to tell
Love is really hard to tell
I feel as if going through hell
If only I could have you with cheers
I’m afraid I couldn’t help my tears
The first time I hold your hand
And your fingers tell you are so kind
Every passionate eye contact behind
Unspeakable worry I later find
And it makes me feel a poor green hand
You ask me to put out the fire in heart
Whatever is done is wrong on my part
If I could cut and open the heart to you
To alter this painful result though
I’d say I am really willing to try
As I’ve had enough of bitterly lonely pie
