憎恶中国论(美国人):
While any loss of life is to be regretted, we must all bear in mind that this is a NATURAL disaster. Nothing anyone could have done would have prevented this.
HOwever, I do NOT feel one shred of pity or sympathy for China. As far as I'm concerned, the entire country could be buried under rubble and it would be a good thing.
The reason is simple. China is pro-actively blocking any outside assistance to Burma by backing the junta in charge. Nearly 100,000 people are dead or missing and many more are likely to succumb to disease. By any measure, this is clearly a CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY and China is an accomplice. Let me be clear, China is an accomplice to mass murder in Burma.
China's misery as a result of this quake will be finite. At some point rescue will cease and recovery will begin. They'll build a monument to commemorate the dead. However, the effects of the cyclone in Burma will - thanks to China's backing - continue for months, if not years. Those affected by disease resulting from the cyclone may be damaged for life. China sheds no tears for these Burmese victims of a disaster every bit as natural as the one that hit them.
These same Chinese are deliberately undermining trade with the US by shipping us inferior, contaminated, poisoned goods. They smile at us and show their "good" face, but turn around and actively spy on us.
This is not a new phenomenon. China has been deliberately cheating its trading partners since the days of the silk trade. This habit of screwing customers to maximize profit is culturally ingrained as it goes back centuries. And they pursue it with reckless abandon. The west coast of the US is the unfortunate recipient of the coal pollution China generates every day when it is carried eastward by the trade winds.
Pollution, poisoned pet food, poisoned pharmaceuticals and consumer goods, lead laced toys, actively spying on us, blocking aid to people in desperate need in order to continue wielding influence in the region. THAT is the real China. And now they want the world's sympathy. They want the world's respect because the Olympic Committee foolishly gave them the games.The Chinese are liars and hypocrites. They want to have their cake and eat it too. If they want the world's respect, the Chinese must begin behaving in a respectable manner. On all fronts.
支持中国论(同是美国人,观点却有天壤之别):
Great essay. thank you so much for your more objective and indepth analysis of this issue, Dr. Mahbubani! I strongly agree with you that here in America, our news, although independent and privately owned, are often bombarded with negative reports about China. I started to doubt American media's credibility on issues relating to China after I had been there a few times. The ground reality, the people I talked to, were vastly different from those portrayed on CNN, FOX or BBC.
I also support our President Bush attending the Olympics this summer, as his attendance is certainly a gesture of goodwill and willingness to engage, cooperate, and listen to the Chinese people and government. As you pointed out, I'm also quite disappointed that certain short-sighted politicians like Merkel and Sarkozy have bluntly refused to attend the Olympics because it hurts their "moral consciousness," whether they have any in the first place is still a question. What they did, just like our presidential candidates here in America, are completely motivated by their domestic politics, all so eager to gain further votes from ill-informed voters who usually like to see seemingly "courageous" politicians "taking a stand" against evil, especially when that evil is Communist China.
When Jack Caffety made those rather racist comments on CNN, I was not surprised, as that headcase also did some pretty stupid things in the past, like hitting a cyclist with his gigantic Cadillac in broad daylight.
Again, thanks for this great analysis.
地震过后的忧虑:
Such enthusiasm can turn quickly. Government-run reconstruction programs can't hope to match such an unprecedented display of personal generosity. As days drag into months, people are sure to grow impatient and angry that the cleanup isn't happening faster, and to question shoddy construction in the area. That would make a perfect opportunity to attack official corruption at the roots—and to wrest some good from a monstrous tragedy.
美国人的自嘲?
My fellow Americans: Let us be specific how to enlighten the Chinese so that they can be one of us.
Here is our recommendation to you Chinese students in the United States:
1). Stop your outdated torturing technique and try our water boarding, which is endorsed by President G. W. Bush.
2). Learn how we have dealt Branch Davidians and lit them up in flame in Waco, Texas. This may enlighten you how to deal with those violent monks, particularly Dalai Lama who has been on our CIA payroll ($180,000 a year) for his violence and military role in Tibet in 1960???s
3). If you really need to jail someone, use secret prisons just like our CIA???s. Learn the advantages to install these facilities overseas.
4). You shall learn how we loosen up prisoners in Abu Ghraib. This has a lot of fun.
5). You must learn the art of PR to convince the world to liberat another country, like we did in Iraq. We liberated Iraqis and now they have the unprecedented freedom to kill each other (we are also providing weapons and teaching them knowhow hand by hand).
6). You must learn our history of how we have dealt with native Indians and how we are showing the world of their wonderful Indian conservation. Adding a casino would be a plus. We believe that this is particularly relevant to your current problem.
7). You must learn The Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male, also known as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, conducted by one of our federal agencies, U.S. Public Health Service, now called Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We white Americans enlightened ourselves and advanced human medical science by study how syphilis spreads and kills blacks by withholding penicillin. Now you know why we are scientifically and technologically advanced.
On the other hand, if you really want show the world how good you have learned from us. Do the following: greeting US athletes during the Olympic Games with banners of "Free Iraq!" "Stop genocide and ethnic cleansing in Iraq!" "Stop Gitmo!" "Stop water boarding and torturing prisoners!" "Stop CIA secret prisons!" "Yankees, please teach Chinese how to run Tibetan conservation/casinos like your Indian Conservation/casinos"
