Nowadays, campuses across China witness a frenzy for fantasy fictions, which dominates almost the entire online most-viewed booklist. Those fictionss, unlike the epics of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia, which are both educational and thought-provoking, concerns scarcely anything about the real life. Their only and eternal theme is romance and heroism.
To illustrate the danger of such reading materials, I’d like to take my own experience as an example.
During my high school life, I’ve encountered some of those bestsellers, which includes the series of Mirror by the Moon, and the epic of Soushenji by Fox under the Tree. All of them boast a dashing style of writing. The authors generously employed exaggerating words to depict a romantic world where all the virgin beauties’ life-purpose was to get captured by a handsome hero. Besides the lofty writing skills, the whole story can always be neatly summarized as a multi-role-amativeness under the background of several independent wars (since most heroines are supposed to be princesses). However, at that time, those stories nicely fitted in my born-with heroic dreams. At once I got addicted and threw away the coming college entrance exams.
I would not say that the sermons of teachers and my parents had changed me intrinsically, because the hatred of obedience is also part of my nature. Actually it’s the education I received and the books I’ve previously read that had gradually persuaded me from indulging in those idle daydreams.
Having experienced all the ridiculousness and self-questioning, finally I’ve discovered that, of all the successful and venerable persons in the world, most lived a strictly disciplined life, and none has been transported to the mad degree of romance addiction. Except for Marcus Antonius, the half partner of the empire of Rome, whereas he was indeed a voluptuous man and inordinate, thus he died tragically in the war with August.
Romance is such an alluring temptation that few can reject. As adolescents, we are easy to step into its trap and therefore should be wide-awake of such passion. Poets of the ancient times have warned us: the eager pursuers for Helena quitted both wealth and wisdom. That’s why we shall take special alertness towards it.
We are advisable and ingenious people, blessed with the gift of intelligence and civilization. We are supposed to become honorable and worthy persons who make great contributions to the society. To surrender to appetency and to immerse in romance, that’s the behavior of the illiterate primitives. And to make the full value of our lives, we must face the reality of the society and take our part of responsibilities.
