Good Gym Manners

When you work out, how considerate are you?

Many people go to the gym not only to get healthy, but also for quiet time. But sometimes rude people seem determined to prevent that. Just ask Benjamin Cochran, 31, who worked out in a gym and found it quite pleasant, except for one problem.

“There was a customer who would come in on a pretty regular basis,” he recalled. “This guy stunk the whole gym up. People would leave because of this guy.”

Then, says Claudia Griffin, 52, wouldn’t you think you’d get some quiet relaxation in the sauna? Think again. “Girlfriends yapping and yapping,” she said. “Most people who frequent saunas are quiet. Yapping in the sauna is irritating … and leave your cell phone in your locker.”

Common courtesy

Matthew Joseph, 24, thinks some of the rudeness is on purpose. “What never ceases to amaze us is how large [men] load up a machine that typically requires free weights, go through the motions and leave the weight on, knowing what an unpleasant chore it is for others who would like to use the apparatus.” Joseph said. Smaller people have trouble removing the weights. And let’s not even talk about the person who sits on a machine for 10 minutes, not using it, but instead talks to a friend or on a cell phone while others wait for him or her to decide to move.

Gym etiquette is simply common sense, says Kristie Spalding, head of corporate communications for the American Council on Exercise. A Web survey by her organization said people who avoid gyms do so because of poor gym etiquette. The issue can be as striking as “gym intimidation,” she said. “So many people already are intimidated by a gym setting; rude patrons can make the experience worse.”

Gym etiquette? Why should we behave like gentlemen even when we do exercise, it’s time to be wild in gym, do you agree?

In some extent I agree on that, but I also think we should have common manners in Gym,you can be wild in gym when you work out, but you also should not affect other people, many chinese lack of proper etiquette in certain occasions ,I knew a person who is grown up in countryside and he graduated from a famous univesity, when I had to eat with him, his tabble manner really made me laugh and somehow irritated me,not because he is hayshaker ,many friends of mine are grown up in countryside but they have learned many social etiquette, only he still keep some bad table manner,in restaurants while eating he even stayed down chair on foot, this made others tease him a lot,I never told him what he was doing was improper, but I never want to have dinner with him since then,I know that when he was child,he was used to eating in a small table which he had to stay down on foot, but he hadn't pay attention to social manners, even he was hardworking person and good at other things, but he was not welcome in many social gatherings. When you trave abroad, the rude people in the world may be chinese, they throw rubbish everywhere, there are a lot of joke about Chiese,so many chinese need to learn some social etiquetee

Translate the following sentence into Chinese, ‘The issue can be as striking as “gym intimidation,”’
这个问题可以象体育馆害怕那样一样显著。

According to the recording, what’s the meaning of ‘pet peeve’
don't know.
