One of the most gentle and enduring celebrity partnerships of all time

Old-time Nashville stars and insiders are protective of the couple that acted as encouraging benefactors to so many. Duane Allen, lead singer of the Oak Ridge Boys and a friend of the Cashes, said, “Thee were no boundaries for Johnny and June. They appealed to everyone, and they treated everyone like family.”
Allen and the other Oaks toured with Johnny and June, and their friendship smoothed the Grammy-winning group’s rocky transition from gospel to the country mainstream is the 70’s. “We were getting behind in our bills and we were getting squeezed by the tax people,” Allen recalled. “I went to John and said, “I need to come up with some money pretty fast.”
Allen offered to sell the groups ‘s publishing company to Cash for $25,000 Johnny wrote a check, handed it to Allen and told him to keep the company.
“He said, ‘Go pay your bills and get yourselves in shape, don’t give up and know that I believe in you.’ He hugged me like a father would hug a son”
Allen said he didn’t take the check, but instead left with a new resolve.
Decades later, the Oak Ridge Boys would sing for Johnny at June’s funeral.
“Singing over that casket where his beautiful wife lay, it was a privilege,” Allen said. “It was also the most soul-wrenching thing I’ve ever done.”
Cash died a few months later in 2003, walking one last line behind his beloved June.
