The Iraqi Interior Minister Bayan Jabor has strongly denied allegations that his ministry has links to the groups responsible for a series of sectarian attacks on members of Iraq's minority Sunni community. In a BBC interview, Mr. Jabor acknowledged that some of the gangs which have carried out the killings and kidnappings have been wearing police uniforms. But he said they had no connection with the Interior Ministry. And he insisted the incidents of sectarian violence were not as widespread as many believed.

"Something sectarian happened between some bases, not all the Iraqi peoples. There are many Sunnis and Shiites, they are very well. In that happening, some sectarian violence, it is happened between the terrorist and some political members. "

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has said his country will grant the Palestinian authority urgent financial aid. In a statement released after a telephone conversation with the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, Mr. Lavrov stressed the need to maintain stability in the Palestinian territory. The United States and the European Union have stopped funding the authority. The supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, described the cut in aid to the Palestinians as tantamount to an act of aggression by Israel.

Palestine is still being aggressed by the Zionists and their supporters. But we can come to the understanding that there is a change taking place, and the scene is going to completely change in the lands of Palestine and also in the whole Middle East.

An international religious conference is taking place in China today. It’s said to be the first of its kind in China since the Communist came to power in 1949. Hundreds of scholars and monks from around the world are attending the World Buddhist Forum in the eastern city of Hangzhou. Daniel Griffiths reports from Beijing.

There are about 100 million Buddhists in China, but this is the first conference of its kind since the officially atheist Communist Party came to power in 1949. Beijing keeps a tight rein on all religious activities, fearing a possible challenge to its authority. Worship is only allowed through state-run organizations. Many monks and nuns have been jailed for their loyalty to the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. And followers of the underground Christian Church have also received lengthy prison sentences.

The Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has been testifying at an inquiry into claims that the country's monopoly wheat supplier AWB Ltd paid millions of dollars in bribes to the former Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein. The bribes, which AWB denies, are alleged to have taken place under the UN's now discredited "oil for food" programme. Phil Mercer reports from Sydney.

Alexander Downer is the most senior government figure so far to give evidence to the judicial hearing. In a written statement to the inquiry, which was made public as he took the stand, Mr. Downer repeatedly denied having seen a series of warnings sent by diplomats about possible corruption at AWB. The hearing has previously been told that Australian embassy staff and trade officials began alerting ministers about the company's dealings in Iraq six years ago. Mr. Downer is Canberra's long-serving foreign minister. He held the position when more than $200 million in kickbacks were allegedly paid by AWB to Saddam Hussein.

Official results from the Italian general elections say that the center-left coalition led by the former Prime Minister Romano Prodi has won a narrow victory in the lower house of the Congress. Final results from the upper House are still to be released. Mr. Prodi told cheering supporters in Rome that victory was theirs. But almost immediately the Center-right parties led by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi disputed the claim. From Rome, Johnny Dymond. .

Since the voting stopped more than 12 hours ago, first the left, then the right thought that they had won this ?? election. Now the left says it's over. The Interior Ministry has declared the center-left coalition led by Romano Prodi to be the winner in the Chamber of Deputies by the smallest of imaginable margins. Under Italian electoral law, its tiny lead, less than a 10th of a percentage point, will translate into a clear majority of seats.

The anti-corruption campaign group, Transparency International, has urged governments in the West to help Africa recover part of the wealth lost through corruption and kept abroad. In the declaration presented in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, Transparency International said it estimated the amount of illegally impropriated money invested outside Africa at $140 billion. Genc Lamani reports.

Transparency International, or TI, which leads the campaign against corruption worldwide, says the phenomenon is seriously undermining Africa’s fragile democracies and hindering efforts to achieve sustainable development. Representatives of TI from seven African countries including Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda, said that if Africa was to reverse the trend, it was imperative that African governments demonstrated the political will to fight corruption in a meaningful way. But the organization says that without active cooperation from western governments, the process could take 100 years to complete.

Talks aimed at ending 3 years of conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan have began in the Nigerian capital Abuja. The current head of the African Union, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, and the Nigerian leader, Olusegun Obasanjo, are chairing meetings with rebel leaders and the Vice President of Sudan, Ali Osman Taha. Since the conflict began, tens of thousands have died and more than 2 million people have been driven from their homes. Alex Last reports from Abuja.

This grand meeting is supposed to speed up the process of reaching a comprehensive peace deal on Darfur. The AU says that after 2 years of agonizingly slow negotiations, the two sides haven’t till the end of the month to reach an agreement. Mediators say there has been real progress over the last few weeks, a new ceasefire deal could be reached soon, which they hope would pave the way for a comprehensive peace agreement by the end of April.

More than three months after elections in Iraq and with negotiations still deadlocked over the formation of a new government, the Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari has said that he will not be forced out of office by the United States and Britain. In an interview with the British newspaper, the Guardian, Mr. al-Jaafari said that it had been a democratic decision to make him prime minister and that the views of the Iraqi people should be respected. E. Smith reports.

Mr. al-Jaafari has been unable to garner support outside his own party. But despite this, he’s resisting pressure to make way for someone else. In the interview, he appears to strike a defiant tone, refusing to give up his claim to lead Iraq despite strong pressure from both the United States and Britain, and from within Iraq itself. He said the decision to make him prime minister was a democratic one, and one which he stood by. We have to protect democracy in Iraq, he says, and it is democracy which should decide who leads Iraq.

The American ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad has confirmed that United States officials have held talks with some groups linked to the Sunni-led Iraqi insurgency. In a BBC interview, Mr.Khalilzad said that in his judgment, the talks that had an impact as the number of attacks on US troops had fallen. Andrew North reports.

Zalmay Khalilzad is seen as one of the architects of President Bush's decisions to overthrow Saddam Hussein 3 years ago. In a rare acknowledgement by an American official, he said the US is talking to some groups with ties to the insurgency. Talks which have had some results, he said, citing a significant reduction in attacks on US troops in recent month as an example. Dr. Khalilzad would not specify which groups the US has had contacted with, other than to say we won't talk to people, he called Saddamists or terrorists seeking a war on civilization.

The Pakistani government has ordered the relocation of an entire town devastated in last October’s earthquake. Experts told senior ministers it would be too dangerous to try to rebuild the town of Balakot in Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province. E. Smith reports.

Balakot was a thriving town with a population of 300,000 when it was hit by last year’s devastating earthquake. Thousands died and many more were left without shelter when homes, schools, mosques and hospitals were all destroyed. The initial plan was to rebuild. But as Balakot runs across the earthquake’s fault line, experts say rebuilding there is just too dangerous. Pakistan’s Earthquake Rehabilitation & Reconstruction Authority now has the job of finding a new location for Balakot and the immense task of rebuilding villages, towns and cities throughout the affected region.

The human rights organization, Amnesty International, says it believes the United States Central Intelligence Agency may be using Djibouti as a location for its secret detention centers for terrorism suspects. Amnesty says it has records of nearly 1000 flights used by the CIA for what's known as "extraordinary rendition", where suspects are moved between countries without extradition. Rob Watson reports.

Amnesty International's allegations are based on interviews with three Yemenis who claim to have been held in at least 4 different secret US prisons between October, 2003 and May of last year. Amnesty says, while the evidence they provided is not conclusive, it suggests they were held in Djibouti, Afghanistan and somewhere in Eastern Europe. One of the Yemeni men, for example, says he was questioned by American officials in a room where a picture of the president of Djibouti hung on the wall. Although the report is highly critical of the US approach to terrorism suspects, it does not contain any suggestion from the three men that they were tortured by their American captors.

The frontr-unner to be the next prime minister of Japan, the chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe, has suggested that he would visit the Yasukuni war dead shrine despite the damage it might do to relations with China. The current Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has visited the shrine five times. The memorial includes more than a thousand war criminals among those it honors. Chris Hogg reports from Tokyo.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Shinzo Abe, has been a strong supporter of Mr. Koizumi's visits to the shrine. Now he appears to have confirmed that if he was chosen to replace him as prime minister when Mr. Koizumi steps down in September, he will also worship at the shrine. When asked whether he would visit, he replied he would like to continue putting his hands together to pray for those who had died for the nation. He also rejected an offer by the Chinese to resume summit meetings with the Japanese leadership if the visits were stopped.

Researchers in the United States say nicotine, the main addictive agent in tobacco may stop chemotherapy drugs killing cancer cells. The scientists say the amount of nicotine found in a smoker's bloodstream crippled drugs commonly used to treat lung cancer. Corinne Podger reports.

The researchers at the University of South Florida in the United States were working with cells from lung cancer patients in a laboratory, not with human patients. So they stressed that their findings are preliminary. Nevertheless, they say the study is cause for concern. The team found that nicotine effectively cancelled out the therapeutic effects of three common anti-cancer drugs. The study published in the proceedings of the National Academy of Science suggests that nicotine may derail the benefits of anti-cancer drugs whether it comes from cigarettes or products like nicotine gum and patches aimed at helping smokers to quit.

The polls have opened in Thailand in a snap election being held three years early. The Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra called the election in an attempt to dispel allegations of corruption and abuse of power. Phil Mercer reports from Bangkok.

Prime Minister Thaksin has called this "judgment day". The election is effectively a referendum on his leadership after months of political uncertainty. It appears that only an overwhelming show of support from Thailand's 45 millions voters will ease the crisis. The Prime Minister's critics have accused him of corruption and the main opposition parties are boycotting the poll in protest. In the past few months, there've been dozens of anti-government rallies. Tens of thousands of people have demonstrated against the leader they've accused of eroding Thailand's democracy. The prime minister has denied the allegations. To his supporters, Thaksin Shinawatra is a champion of the poll, especially in the countryside where he has provided local low-cost healthcare and grants to farmers.

Audio tapes have been released of phone calls made to the emergency services on the morning of Sep 11th, 2001 as the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were being destroyed by hijacked planes. The New York Times newspaper, which sought the release of the recordings, says they demonstrate a breakdown in communication between the different branches of the city's emergency services. Laura Trevelyan reports from New York.

The voices of the emergency telephone operators and the dispatchers from the fire department can be heard on the tapes, imploring those trapped inside the World Trade Center to be calm and sit tight. The tapes showed that many of the callers were told to stay put, a standard advice for skyscraper fires. Yet on the ground, the fire and police chiefs have taken the decision to evacuate the towers. There was no procedure in place for that information to be shared with telephone operators. A flaw, which city officials say, has since been fixed.

1. 首先要发准每一个单词,这个是基础,注意找准英音的发音;
2. 熟悉整段文章,注意断句以及句子中单词的连读和重读;

1. 首先要发准每一个单词,这个是基础,注意找准英音的发音;
2. 熟悉整段文章,注意断句以及句子中单词的连读和重读;
