The Pakistani government has ordered the relocation of an entire town devastated in last October’s earthquake. Experts told senior ministers it would be too dangerous to try to rebuild the town of Balakot in Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province. E. Smith reports.
Balakot was a thriving town with a population of 300,000 when it was hit by last year’s devastating earthquake. Thousands died and many more were left without shelter when homes, schools, mosques and hospitals were all destroyed. The initial plan was to rebuild. But as Balakot runs across the earthquake’s fault line, experts say rebuilding there is just too dangerous. Pakistan’s Earthquake Rehabilitation & Reconstruction Authority now has the job of finding a new location for Balakot and the immense task of rebuilding villages, towns and cities throughout the affected region.
