For its part, the US Federal Reserve is pushing Citigroup Inc and rival Wells Fargo & Co to compromise over their competing bids for hobbled US bank Wachovia Corp that could result in them carving up its assets.

But the flurry of measures failed to reassure.

Stocks in Asia-Pacific outside Japan dropped more than 5 percent today to their lowest in nearly three years, and shares were expected to open sharply lower in Europe, where contagion from the US subprime crisis has intensified financial industry woes.
Bush discussed bilateral relations and the financial upheavals in the United States in a phone conversation this morning Beijing time.

Bush congratulated Hu on China's successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games and thanked China for its hospitality toward him when he was in Beijing to attend the Olympics. Hu appreciated the US government and people's support for the Games.

Bush briefed Hu on the latest development of the US financial market, saying his government was well aware of the scope of the problem, and had taken and would continue to take necessary measures to stabilize the domestic and world financial markets.

Hu hoped the measures would soon take effect and lead to a gradual recovery of the financial market, which he said not only serves the interests of the United States, but also those of China, and benefits the stability of the world financial market and the sound development of the world economy.

The Chinese president also praised the good momentum of the development of the Sino-US ties in recent years in various areas.

He said China is ready to work with the US side to intensify dialogue, exchanges and cooperation, and properly handle issues concerning mutual interests and of major concern, particularly the Taiwan question, in a bid to push forward the sustained and steady development of the Sino-US constructive and cooperative ties.
This brought the total number of arrests to 18, Shi Guizhong, spokesman for the Security Department in Hebei told a news conference today.

Police have seized nearly 300 kilograms of suspicious chemicals with 222.5 kilograms proven to be melamine, Xinhuanet.com reported today. The remaining chemicals are being checked.

Among the 18 arrested, 12 are managers or heads of dairies and six are chemical dealers, the report said. They are scattered in eight counties of Shijiazhuang City.

Police also cracked down a chemical supply network and caught an important gang member, surnamed Su, in the early hours of Tuesday.

China will launch comprehensive tests of milk products and reform the dairy industry after at least three infants died and thousands more affected in a spreading scandal, the State Council said on Wednesday.

So far, all the sick infants were found to have consumed milk powder produced by the Sanlu Group. The country's two largest dairy companies, Mengniu Dairy Co and Yili Industrial Group Co, were also reported to have batches of milk contaminated with melamine.

Sanlu's general manager Tian Wenhua was detained by police on Wednesday.

Imagine you have two candidates for a job. There CVs are equally good , and they both handsome. Are you swayed by their appearance?

If you were swayed by someone's looks, would that be wrong? In the past, people often equated beauty with virtue and ugliness with vice.

Even now, the expression "as ugly as sin" has not quite passed from the language. There is, of course, the equally famous expression "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", to counter it. Most beholders agree what is beautiful--and modern biology suggests there is a good rule of thumb for assessing someone of either sex. Not an infallible one. And certainly no substitute for an in-depth investigation. But, nevertheless, an instinctive one, and one that is bound to contribute to the advantage of the physically well endowed.
