On the other hand, Kalman filter is a “dynamical” filter, i.e., the system dynamics is directly (real-time) built into the filtering/smoothing process. The predictive nature of “Kalman filter” is the true “jade” that makes this operator beautiful and thus popular. The most useful and successful applications of Kalman filter are those when the dimension of the state vector is not too large. Whether it is a big “A’ or a big “M”, it is most important to note that the success or good results of using “Kalman filter” in various applications can be verified independently.

<!--

Most financial principles can be directly applied to our daily lives. I once used the financial principles to show the benefit of an earlier marriage:

*****
In a broad sense, marriage is very similar to financial investment. It requires both the effort and luck with the best or a good outcome not always guaranteed. It demands long-term patience to see a significant result. It needs to look at the overall portfolio rather than individual fund performance, i.e., individual merits or shortcomings. It also craves for constant nurturing or attention to make necessary adjustments to the overall portfolio.

And finally, we come to the major point of this advice: an earlier investment usually brings better or more opportunities. Your reward will be tremendous if you succeed in an earlier investment. Well, you get another or more chances if you are unlucky and failed initially.

++++++++++++
coolboy [2008-9-8 10:07:24]
标题：SQ3R is also very useful to find a good girl/boy friend

Unless one is majoring in economics it is often in one’s later age to seriously start learning and using the economics principles (when one has accumulated enough equity). This means that it may be too later for boys and girls to correctly apply economics principles to find a good mate. When we were in college, we learnt a lesson in our English class entitled “How to Study” that introduced an SQ3R strategy on how to study efficiently: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Revise.

Just like the economics, this SQ3R strategy can also be applied to many other things including how to find a good girlfriend for a boy or how to find a good boyfriend for a girl. For example, you first go through a “survey” process by excluding those who are too old or too young, too this or too that. Then you “question”, casually asking “are you from North or South?” “What color do you like most?” “Do you like seafood or can you cook a nice fish dish?” etc. The measure of how much you can “read” her mind or vice versa should give you an idea of how much commonality you two have. You then review how much you are able to “recite” what you have told her in previous conversation(s), which should give you an objective measure of how much you are actually close to her. If you find the overall score too low after certain period, then you “revise” it to switch to a different one.

Notes: The major part of this comment was first posted on the following link:

Do you think English is easy? [
http://blog.hjenglish.com/lvle/archive/2006/10/05/470859.html

++++++++++++
coolboy [2008-9-9 0:30:29]
标题：Charles Givens: “More Wealth Without Risk

The books by or about Warren Buffett are mostly on investment in equity/stock market. His investment philosophy is to invest in a long term, i.e., to get rich slowly and surely. I have not read Tim Harford's books but it appears, based on the book reviews, that he is trying to logically explain or related everything in life to financial principles. The book I recommend most is the one by Charles Givens on personal finance, which is broader than Warren Buffett’s equity investment (but is consistent with Buffett’s investment philosophy) and narrower than Harford's book of “The Logic of Life”. However, girls become mature much earlier in their youthful ages than boys do. People also suggest that this is the major reason that girls in general start lagging boys in middle and high schools in their studies because they are not as focused as boys do. The general consensus also suggests that girls are more susceptible to love than boys The story actually meant that those peasants were not serious in doing their work because they were too wasteful. Peasants were supposed to set good examples for us to follow and to learn from them at the first place, which was also the original purpose of our going to the countryside. However, it was a very good story anyway. The only thing one needs to do to make the story perfect (锦上添花，画龙点睛) was to change “pounds” everywhere in the story into “ounces”. Everybody seemed agreed at the moment and coolboy thought that was a great idea too.

Later, and much later, coolboy became a physicist and started to realize the problems of the change by the district head in charge of propaganda. First, those beans were supposed to be shared by the whole class which had about 50 students. If it were only four ounces of beans, then on average, every student would have received only about 10 beans. [Yes! As a physicist, I actually weighted and counted the beans.] Under a normal condition, those girls would not have had the idea of sharing the beans with the whole class in the first place or their classmates would laugh at them. Second, the play was supposed to be based on a true story, which was also the main reason that made the play popular. Different people can tell the same true story in different ways but the critical facts and numbers reflecting the essential truths should not be changed or changed significantly.

What the district head in charge of propaganda did was to say that, basically, the most important principle of the propaganda was political correctness rather than truthfulness. This really bothered me quite a lot. After a while, coolboy was probably one of a few who still knew and remembered the true story behind “Four ounces of beans (四两黄豆)” that was once widely spread. What about many other well-known stories that had been widely spread? For example, one can often read something like Here, the essential part is also related to the number. Why 二个师 rather than 二个集团军 or 二个营? It is a legitimate question to ask whether the number was based on truth or political correctness.

Now, returning to my assistant, as I said at beginning that she was beautiful and good at literature. More importantly, she was really a very good assistant to me or to the job for she can always finish the task of copying the articles to the classroom blackboard in a high quality and timely fashion. However, there was one special character about her: we were often in disagreement and she liked to argue or debate with me on various social and political issues.

It was true that in those years it was the best and the worst of times, it was also the era of fighting and argument But we were supposed to fight against bad guys with our good reasoning and she, as my assistant, was supposed to be always in the same trench as me to fight together Other classmates usually always followed my arguments and agreed with me on various issues whereas she often liked to propose her counter arguments to debate with me.

I tried my best to raise my reasoning to convince her in debates. One effective way of doing so was to write down my logical arguments on a piece of paper, which usually also gave me an opportunity to reflect. Often, good ideas came to my mind while we were still in class. I could not debate to her right away but I can write down my new ideas on a piece of paper. Well, her desk was right behind me. Therefore, once I felt that I gathered enough logical arguments, I would pass my notes to her to let her know that she was wrong. Apparently, she can always propose her counter arguments and pass back her notes. We had quite a few this kind of notes exchanges in those two years to debate various issues. Gradually, I realized that it was impossible or hopeless to let girls, especially this particular girl, admit their mistakes. So, finally, I quit debating with her.

What happened to all those notes passed to me in classes that carried her counter arguments? I do not know. I guess I threw them away after reading those notes. Then, what was the fate of all my notes to her that carried my arguments? Well, I do not know either and never think about a question like this. I do not know the fate of my notes until very recently, after about 36 years of those notes being created.

........................
........................
........................

(To be continued)

<!--

In general, villagers would cook porridge as breakfast for the students but the students would cook lunches and dinners themselves. As a result, there were a few girls in every class left at the village to cook the food for their classmates. At that time, it was very rare to use coal to do cooking in the countryside. Villagers used various kinds of dry crop-stalks to cook the food. In one particular village where that class stayed, girls were using dry beanstalks to cook the food. Those beanstalks were supposed to be clean or empty with all the beans having been taken out before being used for cooking the food. However, it was generally not that easy to get each and every bean out of the beanstalks. What happened in this story was that those girls who used the beanstalks to cook the food carefully checked those dry beanstalks again and took out the leftover beans before using them to cook the food. After about two weeks of hard work, they accumulated four pounds of beans and they were planning to cook those beans and share with their classmates as snack food that evening. Then somehow, suddenly, great leader Chairman Mao’s instructions echoed around the ears of one girl. I have described before about this kind of transition in people’s mood or thinking associated with the “echoes of Chairman Mao’s instructions”:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
http://blog.hjenglish.com/coolboy/archive/2005/09/05/125980.html

“This sentence of ‘Suddenly, great leader Chairman Mao’s instructions echoed around my ears’ was one of the most frequently used sentences in that period. In certain extent, it reflected the reality that ordinary people would ask for helps from Chairman Mao’s thoughts for any problem or any thing they encountered in their daily lives, which, of course, should also include my puzzle on color. The solution to the problem, whether it was useful or not, was almost always guaranteed. At the time, the most frequently used Chairman Mao’s thoughts would be coming from a well-known red book: “Quotations from Chairman Mao Tsetung”. This situation is similar to the one that if you encounter new words in reading, you most likely will go looking up a dictionary for the help. The only difference is that the dictionary will not echo or echo around your ears.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Based on the instructions echoed around that girl’s ears, they should not consume those beans but should return those beans to the villagers. Other girls had different opinions on the issue. Those girls then had discussions and arguments but they still cannot resolve the issue. They brought the issue to the class head/teacher who was a worker coming from a factory in response to Chairman Mao’s call to spread the proletarian revolutionary ideas The class head thought that it was an interesting topic to let the entire class discuss, study and decide. Finally, everyone in the class agreed that they should return the beans to the villagers and they were greatly appraised by the village head.

The story of “Four pounds of beans (四斤黄豆)” that was first published in the school blackboards was later changed into a small play by a school teacher Mr. Zhang (张云南) who was also in charge of student affairs. The play was performed by the school propaganda team and was well received in various occasions from the school, district, city, county and all the way to the province It was well received and highly appraised at the time mainly because it was an original article based on an interesting true story, which was very unusual at the time.

However, there was a tiny but significant change of the play after it was performed in the district’s school art convention. The title and contents of the play were changed into “Four ounces of beans (四两黄豆)”.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT???

(XYS20080101)

<a That included the knowledge of various types of furnaces to make the steel and also some basic knowledge of how different kinds of little amount of metals mixed with iron to form different types of steel. The reason I mention this now is that it relates to another interesting story of how later professor Chang-Lin Tien made $1,000 in one day. $1,000 is not worth much these days but it was worth a lot in 1960s when the story happened. As a result, Chang-Lin Tien was very proud of himself while telling this story.

One of Chang-Lin Tien’s friends was a manager in a steel company and, one day, he invited Chang-Lin Tien to pay a visit to the company because he heard people saying that this professor was a smart scientist. Chang-Lin Tien’s friend would pay him $1,000 if professor Tien was able to visit and stay in the factory for one day, to be accompanied by factory technicians and look around the factory, and possibly to make some suggestions at the end of the visit. After receiving the $1,000 check, Chang-Lin Tien made the following two suggestions to save energy that were all adopted later by the factory:

(1) To replace the existing wires/cables with thicker ones [that would reduce the heat dissipation of those wires];
(2) To install iron meshes in the furnace chimneys [to raise the furnace temperature].

He did not mention the reasons for his suggestions and I added those in the above brackets. The first suggestion indicates that those were electric furnaces and thicker wires would reduce the electric resistance of those wires when the electric power was supplied to the furnaces. I got this figured out long after his speech because my thought kept dwelling on his second suggestion at the time. I said to him: your idea of iron meshes in chimneys was the atmospheric greenhouse effect, right? He said to me: you are exactly right!

Here was my thought: processing iron into steel requires high furnace temperature to let impurities within iron to be exhausted and evaporated, AND we also need chimneys to allow the hot air with impurities to escape from the furnace. At the same time, a lot of heat is also escaped from those chimneys through two processes: (i) convection and (ii) radiation. The installed iron meshes still allow the hot air with impurities to pass but will absorb the higher radiance from the furnace, re-emit part of the absorbed energy back to the furnace, and thus raise the furnace temperature, which is exactly the same as CO2 in the atmosphere raising the surface temperature.

Chang-Lin Tien, who also specialized in radiation, was known to many Chinese scientists:
http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2002/10/tien.html

<!--

I found that many people in astronomy were confused about its physical meaning BECAUSE a conceptual mistake was made in deriving a widely used formula in astronomy (Voigt line profile) many years ago. I made some comments to clarify the issue in the following link:

http://www.astronomy.com.cn/bbs/thread-62027-1-11.html

The following comments taken from the above link are worth reading and carefully digesting to those who are interested in astronomy theory or radiative transfer.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

If F(s) and G(s) are Fourier/Laplace transforms of f(t) and g(t), respectively, then the Fourier/Laplace transform of the convolution between f(t) and g(t) is the product of F(s) and G(s).

In most cases, only one side of the above identity has a (clear) physical significance. For example, the frequency-dependent coefficients of phenomenological conductivity and permeability define product relations, which carry a clear physical meaning. On the other hand, its counterpart that the electric polarization and magnetization of the electromagnetic waves will be related to the electric and magnetic fields through convolution integrals of Fourier transforms is not very clear/easy to understand.

The most interesting example about convolution (and product) in astronomy is the formation of line profiles. It is often said that the Voigt line profile is the convolution of the Lorentz line profile and the Doppler line profile whereas in fact its physical meaning has nothing to do with the concept of convolution!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

A correct and logical derivation of the Voigt profile
----------------------------------------------------------

I made the following statements in the above discussions:

“The most interesting example about convolution (and product) in astronomy is the formation of line profiles. It is often said that the Voigt line profile is the convolution of the Lorentz line profile and the Doppler line profile whereas in fact its physical meaning has nothing to do with the concept of convolution!”

I was trying to answer a common question like the following ones that I also encountered when I was learning this subject:

My point is that there is no 卷积 involved in a correct and logical derivation of the Voigt profile. The final form of the Voigt profile happens to look like a 卷积 is solely by coincidence. The central idea of this problem is that the measured line profile represents a bulk/ensemble average of many atoms/molecules that have different wave forms and/or line profiles. This is very similar to the situation that many people have different heights and weights. You average their heights to get their average height. You take an ensemble mean of people’s weights to get the mean weight.

A correct and logical derivation is as follows:

(-4) Emission or absorption has a finite lifetime (due to either or both natural broadening or/and pressure broadening) so you do not have an infinitely long sinusoidal wave in time that will give you a sharp Dirac-delta function line profile in frequency.

(-3) The line profile you measured is an average of many atoms/molecules that have different lengths of finite lifetimes.

(-2) Different lifetimes of those atoms/molecules satisfy a Poisson distribution of P~exp(-t/tau).

(-1) You take the bulk average of the individual line profiles of different atoms/molecules by integrating over the Poisson distribution function to get the measured Lorentz line profile (or average over “dvdt相空间”).

(0) The Lorentz line profile can be expressed as a simple closed form so nobody has ever talked about convolution when taking the average over the Poisson distribution function to get the Lorentz line profile.

(1) Finite lifetime gives you a Lorentz line profile (due to either or both natural broadening or/and pressure broadening) with a half-width alpha_L

(2) The line profile approaches a Dirac-delta function as alpha_L -- > 0

(3) The random/thermal motion gives you a frequency shift in Lorentz profiles for different atoms/molecules related to the Boltzmann distribution function of velocity.

(4) You take the bulk average by integrating over the velocity distribution function to get the measured line profile (or average over “dvdVr相空间”).

(4.5) The bulk/ensemble average over the velocity distribution function here is similar to taking the bulk/ensemble average over the Poisson distribution before: the measured line profile represents all those atoms/molecules that have different lifetimes AND different velocities, i.e., people have different heights AND different weights.

(5) There is a nonlinear relationship between velocity v and the Doppler shifted frequency. However, if v << c, the relationship becomes linear.

(6) Changing integral variable from dVr to d[nu] gives you the Voigt line profile.

(7) Letting alpha_L-->0 in the Voigt line profile and using the Dirac-delta function relation give you the Doppler line profile.

(8) You now check again and find that the Voigt line profile happens to be the convolution between Lorentz profile and Doppler profile.

(9) It also happens that there is no closed expression for the Voigt line profile so people have always been taking that expression as a physical convolution between two line profiles.

Note: You do not have such a convolution relation if v<<c does not hold. Doppler line profile has been derived after you get the Voigt line profile. In other words, you really cannot have a pure Doppler line profile in theory.

<!--

However, I believe now that it is also a general consensus in many other universities in USA that cheating in school exams/tests is not a good behavior and should receive severe punishments. A few months ago, I leant that a friend’s son was studying in a local community college. I felt very strange because I knew he was accepted by a state university about two years ago. That state university is ranked within top 50 or so in USA and is far better than the local community college he was in. Then, I was told that he was expelled last year from that state university because he cheated in an exam. He had to start his college life over again from this local community college.

There are also some discussions on honesty and ethics in another writing of mine:
USA high school education
http://blog.hjenglish.com/coolboy/articles/77833.html

<!--
