Though my life is quite different now from before I can still vividly remember when I was about ten years old, my family had a hen that laid one egg per day. Eggs in spring or summer did not worth much but eggs in winter were expensive. Therefore, every two weeks or so in a very cold winter early morning, I would bring a basket of dozen eggs to a free market to sell them for 1.2 Yuan. The money would be used to buy soy sauce and vegetables for the family later. Since I was a good pupil at school and I did not want my classmates to see me selling eggs, I always brought the eggs to a free market far away from my home. I usually wore my father’s coat that morning for his coat was thicker than mine. I met a gentleman one time. He brought me to his home and fed me the breakfast. He paid 1.5 Yuan for my eggs and I was very, very happy that day!

A very touching story, or, should I say memoir instead? anyway, I can imagine the time when you wearing your father's coat walked in the freezing wind while the dawn was just close at hand. Sharing the same joy with you^_^

Life in those days could be tough yet happy. The richer we are, not always are we happier. Everything has two sides, right?
Anyhow memory is nice.

it's not a shameful thing to earn your living by yourself, you should be face the difficulties and open your mind to your calssmates, maybe they give you a favor.

it is some valuable life experience. i always believe that those who experienced and survived difficult times are especially charming.

PS. to 11: it is true that life is better now, however, a lot of children still have to drop out of school and work to help their families. this is some fact which u may not be aware of.

伊枫香颂,
Thanks for sharing.

毕丹蓝,
Thanks and I wish I knew who was that cute girl.

JustNobody,
You know, I know, and everybody knows that life could always be tough and happy. “大有大的难处”, right.

Silent,
I wish you happy and success if you happen to be related to 1983.

11,
It happened many years ago. Life has been significantly improved to many people. While looking around and making some comparisons to the people I knew, it turns out that those who had a harder life before have had a more significant improvement.

Woxinfeixiang,
Nowadays, we have the so-called “market economy” so that “regardless it is a white cat or a black cat, it is surely a good cat as long as it catches mice”. Many years ago, we had “planning economy”. At that time, a lazy white cat was better and more attractive than a black working cat. Selling eggs in a free market could be considered a black cat.

awgn,
Thanks for your encouragement. You used the word “charming”. Did you also see a cute girl somewhere as 毕丹蓝 did?

vicky,
There was a saying in my hometown: “清明鸡蛋满街甩”, meaning people selling cheap eggs everywhere on streets after the Pure Brightness Day.
You belong to a lucky generation who lived in a better life than our generation when young.

" my family had a hen that laid one egg per day."
Hi, dear coolboy, I don't think that you hen could lay one egg per day, for in that time your family had only one hen, it was impossible for it to lay an egg every day unless it was a magic hen! hehe~~~

Yeah, a magic hen that gave me magic life also gave me a magic memory. It is so magic that it is very similar to "Alice in Wonderland".

Your story reminds me of my own girlhood. I think I should go and write another story of mine related to hens and young cocks. Haha
I didn't have the exerperience of selling eggs and my mama said she did. But I had the experience of feeding hens and cocks every day after school.
So the fowls welomed me every time. Once one of them gave me a ruthless peck on the back of my left hand for it was too hungry.
Thanks for your reminding! I go and write right now!!!
