Is love powerful?

 

Is love powerful?

- On appearance and daily life habit

 

I have already described the power of propaganda in “[精彩]tinge和flowermoon关于......” and the power of water in “Water is powerful”, respectively. Since the valentine day is quickly approaching it is probably a good time now to ask the question: Is love powerful too?

 

Different people usually have different appearances and different daily life habits. It is interesting to examine whether there is a relationship between one’s appearance and his/her daily life habit. Unmarried people often have the following misconception on this issue: (1) a person with a good appearance must also have a good life habit; (2) if a person with a good appearance happens to have a tiny bad habit, the other party believes that he/she is surely able to change it after getting married. The unmarried people usually have this kind of misconception because they strongly believe in the power of love.

 

An even more interesting case is that a person believes that he/she can adjust his/her own habit to accommodate the other party due to the power of love. All these lead to a common practice by young people in our society that an unmarried person always first tries his/her best to find a friend with a good appearance before establishing a possible love relationship. I recently heard a touching statement in a song, saying: “I do not mind changing for you”. I do believe that the statement would be sung from the bottom of one’s heart when he/she was singing it. However, I believe it is probably an unscientific statement though it carries a very good intention. People’s habits can be easily hidden for a short or a long while but cannot be easily changed. It is very hard or impossible for people to change their daily life habits. It is very hard for men and it is impossible for women to change their habits. Often, it is not due to the lack of love but due to the lack of power.

I think your argument is reasonable. Generally speaking, there is not an exact balance between two lovers so that both of them will have identical feeling toward the other party. To a certain extent, the one who chases the other very hard, either explicitly or implicitly, is the one who decides the love between them. Since he/she is the one who decides the love between them it is natural to ask him/her to do more adjustment, no matter how hard it is to do so.

JustNobody, my above writing was trying to make a point exactly same as yours: “To change your beloved into your type? Better not. Don't let the daydream get the better of you.” So, we are in complete agreement again on this issue.

What is the power of love? This is the power of love: if you really love someone, then, be respect and magnanimous to him/her [but not try to change him/her]. My view on love has also been consistent in my previous writings. For example, in

Go, get married, now!

I did NOT say:

(5) Try, change him/her, then!


I think most people understand the fact that people’s habits are difficult to change or to be changed. However, we also know that sometimes love can make people blind to well-known facts. Especially, on the valentine day when girls receive beauteous roses and gifts from boys and boys hear sweet voice and promises from girls they sometimes let the daydream get the better of them. :P

Conspiring to change a person?

Don't even think about it. I tell you.

You can choose who you want to be with. But don't ever think you can change that person. Same rules apply to friendship. Accept them, accept who they are. This is just my two cents (for showing off for now) :)

The last two sentences of my original writing clearly stated: “It is very hard for men and it is impossible for women to change their habits. Often, it is not due to the lack of love but due to the lack of power.” Therefore, we are actually in complete agreement on this issue and we are talking exactly the same thing: it is impossible for women to change.

I do not understand why did you use the word “conspiring” while stating your opinion. Did you mean that I used some kind of tricks while writing my opinion? I believe this type of tricks only works to a very small number of stubborn women who have a strong rebelling personality: “coolboy said that it was impossible for women to change. I am determined to prove that coolboy is wrong on this issue and I am going to let someone change me!”

Well, the opinions in my writings all refer to general situations unless stated otherwise. For example, we have this well-known English proverb:

“A good wife makes a good husband.” [妻賢夫自良]

Here, the word “makes” clearly means “changes sb into”, which is also consistent with my statement above that it is very hard for men to change. It is very hard. But if a man encounters with a good wife it is still possible for him to change.

I searched, searched very hard, in both western and eastern literature but I failed, I failed to find a proverb saying that a good husband makes a good wife, or something remotely similar to that. In other words, no matter how good a husband is, there is no way that he is able to change his wife.

Well, one may argue that there is a well-known saying in Chinese literature, stating that women are made of water. The word “water” that flows in this saying should mainly refer to woman’s constant-changing nature. Women in general have a mobile mind that is changing constantly. Some of them change their ideas and opinions so fast and so illogical that there is no way for any man to follow them. Obviously, the meaning of “water” or “change” in this saying has nothing to do with the word “make” above. When a man wants to make a good wife he wants to change her into a specific type of lady who is logical, delicate, exquisite, beautiful, and knowledgeable. :)

I think the tone of 葱葱油’s this sentence is completely different from the one by Ikidyounot before: “But don't ever think you can change that person.”


Ikidyounot was trying to express her absolute determination of refusing any change no matter what. On the other hand, 葱葱油 showed some curiosity: Why? Is “being changed” really that bad? If someone really can change me into a lady who is logical, delicate, exquisite, beautiful, and knowledgeable, I actually do not mind being changed........ :)

On the contrary, i think the above statement shows that coolboy does NOT have any prejudice against ladies. What's more, it shows his willingness to be changed as long as the change is positive. This is again consistent with his previous statement that "It is very hard for men and it is impossible for women to change their habits. (which implies that men are more willing to be changed than women, though it may still be very hard)"

Therefore, i do believe that coolboy "observes and analyzes the objective world, and then, states the conclusive truths. ", while Ikidyounot just blindly refuses to accept this.

In my writing, the last three sentences were the thread of thoughts all by 葱葱油. I was only trying to objectively describe her thoughts without adding my opinion to, i.e.,

JustNobody, I think I understand what you meant even though you yourself may not know exactly what you were trying to say. I agree with you that timing is important. I also heard people saying: “Time is money and timing is love.” Well, I am still constantly observing, watching, and hopefully, will be able to help others doing a good job in timing. ....... cheer up! ^_^

Thank you for stopping by my blog and thank you for recommending three love songs to me. I guess I have already passed the age of being keen on this type of songs so I was not aware of any of these songs. I searched the internet and found the lyrics of three songs and copied down below. After carefully reading the lyrics I had some new thoughts about love. But everybody knows that a man’s love thoughts are always a man’s big secret. Therefore, I cannot share it with you. Well, we know that the number one or the most important character of a nice boy is the honesty or the integrity the boy possesses. Therefore, I do not see anything wrong with nice boys openly telling the truth, nothing but the truth about their goodness.
