What were my images of Amsterdam before my trip? Cheese, flowers and windmills. Needless to say, I knew little about this city. But many of my friends had raved about it and its laid-back atmosphere. So I had to see what the hype was about.

Central Station was my first stop. From there I took a cable car and got my first look at the city. When my friends said Amsterdam was flat, they weren’t lying. Without a hill in sight, all I saw for miles were narrow brick houses with creative roofs.

Amsterdam’s flat ground is great for walking, so I decided to take a stroll. I was happily surprised to find that canals run through the whole city. I loved standing on the bridges, watching couples pass underneath in paddleboats.

Later I stopped to eat in a café by one of the many public parks. It was a great place to relax in the midst of the city. I enjoyed some typical Dutch pancakes—a treat at any time of day. Whether topped with sweet fruit or salty bacon and cheese, they are delicious.
