A good shopping experience can depend on good communication. Knowing a few important words and phrases can help you find some great deals!

Asking for information about a sale

Marisa and Clare are shopping for new clothes. They visit Francine’s Fashions, a clothing store that is having a big sale.

Salesperson: Hello. Is there anything I can help you with?

Marisa: Your ads say, “up to 70 percent off!” That’s a big discount. I don’t suppose that discount applies to every item, does it?

Salesperson: Well, we have lowered nearly every price in the store. But only certain items are 70 percent off. Most of our regular stock is 25 to 35 percent off.

Clare: Where are the 70-percent-off items?

Salesperson: Most of them are on that table at the back of the store.

Marisa: Thanks.

Telling a salesperson what you’re looking for

A little later, Clare calls the salesperson over.

Clare: I’m looking for a jacket, but I don’t see any. Do you have any in stock?

Salesperson: What kind of jacket? We don’t have many winter clothes left.

Clare: No, I don’t mean a winter jacket. I mean a light jacket I can wear with a skirt.

Salesperson: Oh, sure. They’re over there in the corner.

Clare: Thank you.

Asking for the price of an item

Clare and Marisa go look at the jackets.

Clare: I love this jacket! I wonder how much it costs. There’s no price tag on it.

Marisa: Let’s ask the salesperson. Excuse me!

Salesperson: Yes?

Marisa: How much is this jacket? Is it on sale?

Salesperson: Yes, it’s actually half price. The sale price is $49.99. It’s regularly priced at $99.99.
