Bethany Hamilton won't let a shark attack sink her surfing career

第一部分 TRANSCRIPT

Feb.28

Getting up before 5 a.m., Bethany practiced twice a day for a competition in January. She managed to place fifth. Then last summer, she won first place in a competition in Honolulu. Bethany is now using a new surfboard that is longer and easier to handle. She continues to set her sights on becoming a world-champion surfer.

Surfers in Hawaii and elsewhere praise Bethany’s amazing ability to overcome her handicap. “There are few girls who can surf at her level with two arms.” Says Hawaiian surfing coach Rainos Hayes.

Despite her setbacks, Bethany has kept a healthy sense of humor. She cheerfully shows off what’s left of her arm. She even playfully calls it “Stumpy.”

The attack has, if anything, made her a more compassionate person, her family says. The day after the attack, she was encouraging other hospital patients. And while visiting New York, she removed her jacket to give to a homeless girl.

Bethany is convinced that God has given her this opportunity to help and inspire others. And she’s determined to do just that.
