In 1999, Dean unveiled the iBot, a wheelchair that can climb stairs and ride over rocky surfaces. The iBot can also balance on two wheels and raises its user to the eye level of a standing person. Dean held a press conference in Paris. Why Paris? So that he could ride the agile iBot all the way up the stairs of Paris’s Eiffel Tower.

Costing $29,000, the iBot is still two expensive for most people. But it has the potential to improve the lives of many disabled people around the world.

But Dean’s most famous invention is the Segway HT. Dean and his engineers spent more than 10 years and $100 million developing the Segway. This electric scooter was finally unveiled in 20002. Dean designed the Segway to be an “electric pedestrian.” He hopes it can help anyone who needs to travel a long distance, but not long enough to need a car.

With a price tag of nearly $4,500, the Segway isn’t cheap. Despite the high price, however, thousands of urban commuters have purchased the handy scooter.
