A big surprise

Sulaiman looked confused. Then he reversed on the highway to get back to the exit! He looked at the sign and then looked at me. It was after this exchange that I realized Sulaiman could not read. He could not read in Arabic or French. He could not read at all.

From that point I directed him the rest of the way. Every time I saw a sign, I would tell him which way to go. He was tired, and whatever he dozed off for a second, the car swerved over the center line. I was scared for my life. A lot of cars honked at us and some almost hit us.

When we got to the airport, we were an hour late. And because Sulaiman couldn’t read, he didn’t know where to take me. I kept repeating, “turn right, turn right!” But he wanted to go left because he saw a sign that he thought indicated a passenger drop-off area. I was so scared of being stranded in Morocco that I opened the car door and started to jump out. He got the hint and turn right.

In the end, my flight was late, so everything worked out fine. Now whenever I go abroad, I’m a wiser, more experienced traveler. I know to always expect the unexpected-especially during a long cab ride.
