第一部分 TRANSCRIPT

I gave my friend Beth a hug, then said goodbye and stepped into my cab. I thought this cab ride to the airport in Casablanca meant the end of my adventures in Morocco. Little did I know my adventures were only beginning.

I had spent a week visiting Morocco. With Beth as my guide, it had been a wonderful, authentic experience. I didn’t want to leave. At the same time, I couldn’t wait to get back home and tell my family about my trip. Beth had arranged for Sulaiman, the friend of a friend, to drive me to the airport. It was supposed to be an uneventful four-hour ride.

Unfortunately, I spoke no Arabic and I soon discovered that Sulaiman spoke no English. We could both speak a little French, but could only converse in very basic terms. That was fine because I planned to sleep most of the trip.

We drove to a police station to get a pass for our trip between cities. Right from the start, it seemed like we drove in circles. Ignoring that telltale warning, I closed my eyes and tried to sleep. Two things kept me from sleeping. One was Sulaiman’s terrible breath. The other was the cold night air. Between the two, I knew I was in for a long ride.
