Colorful Days

Each day held adventures. For breakfast we ate fresh bread-a tasty remnant of the days when France controlled Morocco. As we walked to our destinations, we passed dozens of arches and fountains decorated with beautiful mosaics.

Every turn held something ancient and interesting. Around one corner was the Kairaoutine mosque complex, with one of the oldest universities in the world. Around another corner we entered the 800-year-old section of the city where people make leather goods. Vendors lined the alleys selling leather wallets, purses, slippers and more.

Meaningful Nights

In the evenings we visited Beth’s neighborhood friends. I found out that, in Morocco, visiting is a lengthy affair. When we went, we needed to plan on staying for at least three hours! That wasn’t hard because her friends treated us like family. They introduced me to Moroccan treats like mint tea, olives and jelly. During our conversation, one girl painted intricate henna designs on my arms.

Those relaxed evenings were the most memorable times for me. Through the kindness and generosity of Beth’s friends, I experienced the true heart of Morocco.
