A friend’s own work?
How good are you at doing the right thing? Here’s an opportunity to put your wisdom to work. If you were in the following situation, what would you do?

第一部分 TRANSCRIPT

Feb.1

Tanya Wu is trying to get into a university in America. Along with her application, she must submit an English essay. After completing her essay, Tanya asks her good friend Annette to edit it. Annette has studied in America, and her English is excellent.

Annette agrees to help Tanya. But after reading the essay, she realizes it has a lot of problems. Annette knows that students are supposed to do their own work on application essays. If she makes the necessary changes, the essay will no longer be Tanya’s own work. Without editing, however, the essay could seriously hurt Tanya’s application. Annette doesn’t want to see that happen.

If you were Annette, what would you do? Would you do this?

Decision 1
(Annette discusses the situation with her friend Barb)

Barb: Do you think Tanya understands that she should do her own work on this essay?

Annette: I’m not sure. Most students know that’s an important rule.

Barb: But some students just ignore the rules.

Annette: She could get in trouble if the university admissions office finds out someone edited the essay for her.

Barb: But how would they ever find out?

Annette: Well, if the English is too perfect, that would probably tip them off. Foreign students always make some mistakes in English.

Barb: Maybe you’d better not correct every mistake, then.

Annette: That’s just what I was thinking.

Barb: So you’ll go ahead and edit the essay?

Annette: Yes. Tanya’s a good friend. I’ll do what I can to help her get accepted.
