“Fried chicken!”
“French fries!”

I watched the smiling faces of my eighth grade students as they told me their favorite foods. I could tell they were getting hungry just thinking about their most loved treats.

Ice cream, fried chicken and French fries have long been American favorites, but now they’re becoming popular with Asians, too. My Taiwanese students are proof of Asia’s changing food culture. Many people are abandoning the mostly vegetable-and-rice diet of Asia’s past. Fast food and Western-style __1__ make up a big part of today’s Asian diet.

Cause for concern

Asians’ tastes are changing, and unfortunately, so are their bodies. Many Asians are gaining too much weight and damaging their health. Studies show 20 percent of Beijing adults are __2__. Also, more than 20 percent of Taiwanese children are overweight.

Today’s Asians are also suffering from deadly diseases caused by being overweight. In Taiwan, __3__ deaths have __4__ since the 1980s. A __5__ diet is a major cause of diabetes. The number of cancer deaths and heart disease patients is also climbing. Experts believe unhealthy eating is to blame.
