We're here on business.

去外地旅游时通常都穿轻松便服，如果穿得西装毕挺，很可能是为生意而来： We’re here on business.（我们来这里出差）。在他乡碰到朋友，可以问他：What brings you here?　（什么风把你吹来？）或Are you here on business?（你是来出差吗？）可以答：I’m here on business. (我是来出公差的。) I’m here on vacation. / holiday. (我是来度假的。)

B: My name is Michael Paterson. We’re just arrived from Hong Kong. My office has made a reservation.
A: Certainly sir. Let me check you in.
B: Okay.
A: Let me check your reservation. You require a family suite, don you?
B: No. We’re here on business. It should be two deluxe singles.
A: I see. We made a mistake. Please fill in the registration forms while I prepare a key card for you.
B: Thank you very much.
甲:午安，欢迎光临帝京酒店。
乙:我叫米高柏德臣，我们刚从香港来，我的公司已经订了房间。

旅游他国，有时会碰到一个问题：What’s the purpose of your visit?（你此行是为了什么？）或What brought you here?（你为什么来这里？） 要回答这样的问题，你可以简简单单说：Business（公事）或Sightseeing（观光）。改用完整的句子，则可以说：I’m here on business.（我是来出差的）或I’m here on vacation / holiday. (=I’m vacationing / holidaying我是来度假的）。公务旅行叫business trip，度假旅行则叫vacation / holiday，例如：He went on a business trip to Shanghai.（他去了上海出差）。

Vacation和 holiday两字有什么分别呢？按英式英语多以holiday一字说学校假期和工作上的休假，往往用复数形式，例如：(1) The summer holidays were drawing to an end.（暑假快结束了）。(2) I am taking ten days’ holiday next month.　（我下个月休假十天）。留意十天的假期是ten days’ holiday或a ten-day holiday，不可叫ten holidays。美式英语则会用vacation取代上述两句的holiday(s)。

不过，法定的公众假期，美式英语也叫holiday，例如：Mother’s Day is a holiday in all states.（母亲节是美国各州的法定假期）。这类假期英式英文常称为bank holiday，因为银行当天都会放假，切勿以为bank holiday是银行的特别假期。Public holiday（公众假期）一词，则是英、美都通用的。
