This is AP News Minute.

It’s the final full day of campaigning in the race for the White House. Both Barack Obama and John McCain will spend the day searching for votes in battleground states. Obama will be in Florida, Virginia, and North Carolina. McCain will be in Pennsylvania and five other states before heading home to Arizona.

There will be a private memorial for Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew today. Mourners packed into a Chicago church on Sunday for a public service. The bodies of Hudson’s mother and brother were found late last month. Three days later her nephew was found dead in a SUV. No one has been charged in the killings.

Two separate bombs rip through a Baghdad marketplace this morning, killing six people and wounding more than a dozen. The blast happened in the mainly Shiite section of Baghdad. No one has claimed responsibility.

Most Asian stocks were up overnight with Australia’s market gaining the most in two weeks. Hong Kong’s was up 3% as investors concentrated on several stimulus plans. The Japanese market was closed because of a holiday.

Jon Belmont, the Associated Press with AP News Minute.

VOA

The major U.S. presidential candidates are making last-minute appeals in hotly contested states in advance of Tuesday’s election. As VOA’s Mike O'Sullivan reports, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are focusing on a handful of states that could determine the winner.

In Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Florida, John McCain targeted the tax plan of his Democratic opponent, who McCain says aims to redistribute wealth and stifle economic growth. Barack Obama campaigned Sunday in major cities in the key Midwestern state of Ohio, which has backed the winning candidate in each of the last eleven presidential races. National polls show Obama leading over McCain, aided partly by concerns over the economy. But the race is close in the half dozen or so key states that could decide the election. The U.S. president is chosen on a tally of electoral votes from individual states, not the national popular vote count. As Obama and McCain near the end of a nearly two-year campaign, their political parties are mobilizing supporters in a massive get-out-the-vote drive. Early voting is underway in 34 U.S. states. John McCain will visit seven states on Monday, ending the marathon effort in his home state of Arizona. Barack Obama will make campaign stops in Florida, North Carolina and Virginia then spend the election day in his home city of Chicago. Mike O'Sullivan, VOA News, Los Angeles.

A British drum-maker has died after inhaling anthrax spores while handling imported animal skins. Fernando Gomez, who was from London, had been in intensive care in hospital for more than a week. The Health Protection Agency says it’s traced seven other people who may have come into contact with the animal skins and has given them antibiotics as a precaution. Jannat Jalil reports.

For more than a week, doctors battled to save Fernando Gomez’s life. But nine days after he was admitted to hospital, the drum-maker died with his family at his bedside. It’s thought he breathed in the deadly anthrax spores as he was removing hair from imported animal hides he was using to make his drums. But officials are stressing that anthrax inhalation is very rare and not contagious. Zambia's acting head of state, Rupiah Banda, has been sworn in as president, just two hours after officials said he had narrowly won Thursday's election.

According to final results, Mr Banda beat the main opposition candidate, Michael Sata, by 40.1% to 38.1%.
Earlier, Mr Sata rejected the result, saying a "bunch of thieves" had stolen the vote. His Patriotic Front said it would go to court to demand a recount.
But African regional electoral monitors said voting had been free and fair.
The governing Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) said it recognised this was a moment of high emotion and tension, and urged all Zambians to calm down and work for unity and peace.
Security has been stepped up in the capital, Lusaka, amid fears of further unrest.
On Saturday evening, riot police fired tear gas at Mr Sata's supporters, who marched through a crowded Lusaka slum, setting fire to market stalls and throwing stones in the streets.
Mr Banda took over from President Levy Mwanawasa, who died in August having suffered a stroke a few months earlier.
The 71-year-old former diplomat and ex-vice-president has promised to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor.
Although Mr Mwanawasa reined in inflation and built up impressive foreign reserves, Zambia remains one of the world's poorest countries with more than 60% of the population living on less than $2 a day.
Mr Banda will serve until 2011, when Mr Mwanawasa's term would have ended.

A breakaway faction of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress is meeting to consider establishing a new political party. The meeting comes a day after the ANC went to court to try to stop the new group from contesting next year’s election under a similar name, the South African National Convention.
Peter Biles reports from Johannesburg.

The African National Congress is facing its biggest crisis in nearly 50 years. Dissidents who were unhappy about the swift forced resignation of President Thabo Mbeki last month want to set up a new political party. Mr Mbeki has distanced himself from the increasingly heated debate. But some of those loyal to him, including the former Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota have resigned from the ANC. They accuse the party, which is now under the leadership of Jacob Zuma, of undermining South Africa’s young democracy.

A consumer group is urging the Food and Drug Administration to pull a widely used diabetes drug off the market because of side effects that can be fatal. NPR’s Richard Knox reports.

"
The group, Public Citizen, has petitioned FDA to ban rosiglitazone, brand name Avandia. The group says it combed through FDA data and identified 14 people who suffered liver failure after taking the drug, 12 of them died. Avandia was already under a cloud. Last year, a published analysis concluded the drug raises the risk of heart attacks by about 40%. After that, the FDA required a new warning label. Last week, the American Diabetes Association and the a European diabetes group urged doctors not to prescribe Avandia. Sales of the drug have fallen sharply in the past year, but Public Citizen says about 10,000 prescriptions are written everyday. Manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline says its review finds no connection between Avandia and liver failure, and the drug is safe and effective. Richard Knox, NPR News.”

A new government report says the rate of newly diagnosed diabetes cases has nearly doubled over the past ten years. The survey, from the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, shows the highest rates in the south, where obesity and lack of physical activity are also high. The study says diabetes in adults, especially type 2 diabetes, is strongly correlated with obesity and lack of activity.

Details of a multi-billion-dollar rescue package for Hungary have been announced by the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the World Bank. The deal follows action by the IMF to prompt prop up the economies of Ukraine and Iceland and it’s is designed to help Hungary cope with the effects of the global financial crisis. Jonathan Beale reports.

It’s hoped that this international economic rescue package will help Hungary stave off growing concerns that it could be the next Iceland. The Washington-based International Monetary Fund said it’s reached an agreement with Hungary for a loan of almost $16 billion.
The World Bank is promising $1 billion and the EU, another 8 billion. The aide is likely to be dependent on Hungary’s minority Socialist government slashing public spending. It all amounts to the biggest international rescue package for an emerging market economy since the start of the global credit crunch.

Shares have risen around the world amid expectations of cuts in interest rates. In Japan, the Nikkei index closed more than 7% up, although the electronics company Sony suffered a dramatic fall in profits. The United States Federal Reserve is expected to reduce interest rates later today.

BBC News with Neil Nunes.

An earthquake has struck the province of Balochistan in southwest Pakistan. A senior government official there said at least 150 bodies have had been pulled from the rubble. The quake, which had a magnitude of more than 6, struck a remote area northeast of Quetta near the Afghan border. Charles Haviland has this report from Islamabad.

This quake hit a mountainous area of an impoverished province at five in the morning, when many people were still asleep. Some reports say one village has been more or less wiped out in a landslide following the quake. Ziarat is not far from the provincial capital of Quetta, but the local road infrastructure is poor, which is proving a problem for relief efforts. However, teams of the army and the paramilitary Frontier Corp are now in the area, helping to rescue the injured and retrieve bodies.

The German carmaker Porsche appears to have made billions of dollars in less than 48 hours, at the expense of private investment hedge funds. The company made the profits after it secretly increased its stake in its rival Volkswagen, shares in VW jumped by 82% in trading on Tuesday, after a rise of nearly 150% the day before. The rise in its share value briefly made VW the biggest company in the world.
