The government of China says much progress has been made in efforts to control the spread of blue-ear pig disease. Government officials said last week that 47,000 pigs were infected in July. That was down more than 50% from the number reported for June. The name for the virus comes from the fact that infected pigs can temporarily develop discolored ears. The scientific name is (porcine) reproductive and respiratory syndrome.

中国政府表示在努力控制猪蓝耳病方面已取得了很多进展。上周政府官员指出7月份受感染的猪有47000头，比6月份报告的数字下降了百分之五十几。该病毒的名称因受感染猪的耳朵会暂时性的变色而来，其学名为猪繁殖与呼吸综合征。

China has an estimated 500 million pigs. An Agriculture Ministry spokesman said more than 100 million pigs have been given vaccine to prevent the disease.

据估计，中国有5亿头猪。农业部一发言人表示已给1亿多头猪注射了预防该疫情的疫苗。

The spokesman said 257,000 pigs were infected with the virus this year. 68,000 of them died. Many more were destroyed. An Agriculture Ministry official said the outbreak involves a form of the virus that is unusually deadly to pigs.

该发言人还表示今年有25.7万头猪感染的该病毒，其中6.8万头病死，更多的则被消毁了。农业部一官员称疫情的爆发与猪高致病性的一种病毒种类有关。

Vietnam also has reported recent cases of blue-ear disease. The disease causes reproductive failure in female pigs and breathing difficulties in young pigs. Older pigs may also be affected.
