1. illegally adv. 不法地
illegal adj. not allowed by the law.
eg. Several immigrants enter the country illegally every day. 每天都有几个移民非法进入这个国家。
2. falsified
v. to change a written record or information so that it is no longer true.
eg. She had to falsify the accounts so you wouldn't know about it. 为了不让您发现,她还得在账目上做点手脚。
3. sledding n. v.
a vehicle for travelling over snow and ice, with long narrow strips of wood or metal instead of wheels. Larger sleds are pulled by horses or dogs and smaller ones are used for going down hills as a sport or for pleasure.
eg. The sled gathered speed as it moved down the hill. 雪橇向山下滑动时速度变得越来越快。
4. frostbite n. v.
a medical condition in which parts of the body, especially the fingers and toes, become damaged as a result of extremely cold temperatures.
eg. If the frostbite is only superficial, new skin will form. 如果冻伤只是浅表的,新的皮肤会长出来。
5. hypothermia
n. a medical condition in which the body temperature is much lower than normal.
eg. Every winter some old people die from hypothermia. 每年冬天都有些老人死于体温过低。
6. gangrene n. v.
the decay that takes place in a part of the body when the blood supply to it has been stopped because of an illness or injury.
eg. When gangrene set in, his foot have to be amputated. 他的脚生了坏疽,必须截除。
7. toes
n.
(1) one of the five small parts that stick out from the foot;
(2) the part of a sock, shoe, etc.
keep sb on their toes: to make sure that sb is ready to deal with anything that might happen by doing things that they are not expecting.
make sb's toes curl: to make sb feel embarrassed or uncomfortable
v.
toe the line: to say or do what sb in authority tells you to say or do, even if you do not share the same opinions, etc.
eg. Some councilors refused to toe the party line on defence. 有些议员拒不遵循党的防务政策.
8. scarf
n. a piece of cloth that is worn around the neck, for example for warmth or decoration.
eg. She twisted a long scarf round her head. 她用一条长围巾裹住了头。
9. mittens
n. a type of glove that covers the four fingers together and the thumb separately.
10. gloves
n. a covering for the hand, made of wool, leather, etc. with separate parts for each finger and the thumb.
11. Treasury n.
(1) the government department that controls public money;
(2) a place in a castle, etc. where valuable things are stored.
12. reclaimed v.
(1) to get sth back or to ask to have it back after it has been lost, taken away, etc;
eg. You’ll have to go to the police station to reclaim your wallet.
(2) to make land that is naturally too wet or too dry suitable to be built on, farmed, etc;
eg. The site for the airport will be reclaimed from the swamp.
(3) to obtain materials from waste products so that they can be used again;
eg. They reclaim rubber from old tires. 他们从旧轮胎中回收橡胶。
(4) to rescue sb from a bad or criminal way of life.
13. foreclosure n.
foreclose v. (finance) (especially of a bank) to take control of sb’s property because they have not paid back money that they borrowed to buy it.
14. refinancing 再提供资金;再筹措资金
v. (finance) to borrow money in order to pay a debt.
15. secured
adj.
(1) feeling happy and confident about yourself or a particular situation;
eg. At last they were able to feel secure about the future.
(2) likely to continue or be successful for a long time;
eg. The future of the company looks secure.
(3) ~ (against / from sth) that cannot be affected or harmed by sth;
(4) guarded and/or made stronger so that it is difficult for people to enter or leave;
eg. The building is secure against intruders.
(5) not likely to move, fall down, etc.
eg. It was difficult to maintain a secure foothold on the ice.
v.
(1) ~ sth (for sb/sth)| ~ sb sth (formal) to obtain or achieve sth, especially when this means using a lot of effort;
(2) ~ sth (to sth) to attach or fasten sth firmly;
eg. The tables on board were secured firmly to the floor.
(3) ~ sth (against sth) to protect sth so that it is safe and difficult to attack or damage;
eg. The windows were secured with locks and bars.
(4) to legally agree to give sb property or goods that are worth the same amount as the money that you have borrowed from them, if you are unable to pay the money back.
eg. The bank required collateral to secure the loan agreement. 银行得到了保证该项贷款协议的保证品。
