Mazda Motor and Ford plan a 500 million dollar subcompact car plant in Thailand, that according to a source familiar with the project. Mazda, one third owned by Ford and the US automaker will build new Assembly lines next to an existing Thai plant that produces pick-up trucks mainly for export. A formal announcement is planned later on Tuesday in Hiroshima and Bangkok, regarding the 50-50 joint venture.
The plant will follow the September opening of a three way factory in China with local partner Chongqing Chang’an Automobile. The China plant builds about 160000 subcompacts a year while Mazda has said It looks to boost Thai plant output from 173000 currently. Shares of Mazda, Japan’s No.6 automaker rose on the day on the back of a weaker yen.
