Bringing Color to Life With Natural Dyes (2/2)
■点击查看听力答案■
Mix 8 grams of alum with 7 grams of cream of tartar in a small amount of hot water. Add the solution to a metal pan of cool water. Next, add the wool and place the mixture over heat. Slowly bring the liquid to 82 degrees Celsius. Heat the mixture for 45 minutes. After it cools, remove the wool and wash it.
To prepare the dye solution, cover 30 grams of onionskins with water. Use only the dry, brown outer skins. Boil the liquid until the onionskins lose their color, about 45 minutes,. Remove the skins after the dye cools. Now it is time to dye the wool. Place the wool into the dye and heat the mixture. Bring it to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to 82 degrees. Now heat the dye for about 45 minutes or until the wool is the desired color. Keep in mind that wet wool looks darker than it is. Once the dye cools, remove the wool and wash it. Now the wool is orange or yellow. Or at least it should be. ■隐藏■

Global Warming Becomes Major US Campaign Issue(1/3)
■点击查看听力答案■
The U.S. National Academy of Sciences says there is a growing body of evidence that the Earth's atmosphere is warming and in recent decades that temperature change has been caused by human activities.
Scientists at the Academy say the most striking proof of global warming is what they call a relatively rapid and widespread increase in temperature during the past century. They say other evidence of warming, such as increases in ocean temperatures, shrinking mountain glaciers and the decreasing polar ice cover are consistent with this trend.
David Sandalow, an energy and environment scholar at the Brookings Institution, says the evidence is clear.
"We have a good body of science on the impacts of global warming, we have never seen greenhouse gas concentrations in this range in all of human history. They are accelerating at rates that are wildly unknown in human history. The potential threat is very serious."
The National Academy of Sciences says greenhouse gases have increased significantly since the Industrial Revolution, mostly from the burning of fossil fuels for energy, industry and transportation.
It was only in recent years, however, that most scientists and political leaders began to agree that the changes are due primarily to human behavior.

Don’t we just love those long, hot summer days in the sun? Keep in mind, however, that the high temperatures and excessive humidity (湿气过重)can pose dangers. One of the dangers to be aware of is that of heatstroke. Heatstroke occurs as a result long, extreme exposure (暴露)to the sun. When a person does not sweat enough to lower body temperature core temperature rises quickly and heatstroke occurs.
The first aid tips in this article in no way precludes(排除) immediate medical attention. Heatstroke can be extremely damaging to you health. It progresses very quickly and is life threatening. While there are first aid measures that can be taken, heatstroke is a medical emergency. Time is crucial and help should be summoned immediately.
Infants and the elderly are among the group at high risk for heatstroke. Also vulnerable (易受…的攻击)are the obese(肥胖的), alcoholics(酗酒者), persons taking certain medications, or those with cardiovascular(心脏血管的)disease.
Another group that may be at risk is the summer athlete. As with any prolonged(延长的,拖延的)physical activity, summer sports can be potentially d angerous. An excellent source of information on heat stroke and how it relates to summer sports can be found at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute online.
Some risk factors for heat stroke include dehydration(脱水) alcohol use, cardiovascular disease, and medications. The important thing to remember is that when high temperatures and humidity are present conditions are right for heat stroke. There are some preventive measures you should take if you are going to be in the heat for extensive hours. This is especially necessary if you are planning prolonged physical activity.
Have plenty of water and/or sports drinks on hand to prevent dehydration. Wear clothing that allows you to sweat and will prevent overheating. Heat stroke results from the body’s inability to sweat and keep itself cool. Take breaks and sit in a shaded area to cool down.
Some early warning signs of heatstroke may include a rapid rise in body temperature (104° F or higher), irritability(过敏性), confusion, dizziness, nausea(反胃), fatigue(疲劳), hot, dry red skin, hallucinations(幻觉,幻想), and rapid heart beat. There may even be be loss of consciousness.
If you suspect someone has heat stroke take action quickly. Have someone call 911 for help. Get the person out of the sun into a shaded or air-conditioned area.
If possible immerse the person in a tub of ice water, or spray them with a garden hose. If nothing else wrap them in cool sheets. Whatever means you have, the objective is to cool them down as quickly as possibly. Monitor them closely. Cool the person until their body temperature drops to 101-102°F.
Move quickly, if not treated, heat stroke can be fatal(致命的) in with-in the hour. If medical assistance does not arrive after you have cooled them down, call a hospital emergency room for further advice.
In conclusion, when enjoying the intense heat and humidity of summer remember to wear lightweight, breatheable clothing. Keep plenty of water and sports drinks on hand. Schedule heavy physical activity for cooler hours of the day. Acclimate yourself to the sun and heat by spending short times in the sun at first. With these few steps in mind may you all have a wonderful summer whenever it comes to your part of the globe.

Italy's Proposed Family Law Draws Large Protests
Demonstrators from all over Italy gathered in a Rome square Saturday for the Family Day rally. They listened to songs like this one whose words evoked the need for children to have both a mother and a father.
Married couples with their children raised their voices to protest a proposed law that would give greater rights to unmarried couples, including gays and lesbians.
This woman says the family is important because society is based on the family and it is a value for everyone, not just Christians.
Lay Catholic groups and family associations organized the rally. They stressed the importance of policies that will favor the traditional family unit and family values based on marriage between a man and a woman.
Thousands of supporters of the controversial bill organized a counter-rally in Rome's famed Piazza Navona square. They said Italy would be a more civilized country if it gave rights to unmarried and gay couples.
The draft legislation still requires parliamentary approval. Prime Minister Prodi has said lawmakers in his divided coalition are free to vote on it according to their conscience.

HOW DO YOU SLEEP ?
You may not achieve the comfort levels and sleep position you are used to in your bed at home, but look around the cabin next time you fly to see the many different positions we adopt (or try to !) whilst asleep. Scientists believe the position in which a person goes to sleep provides an important clue about the kind of person they are. So …. what does your sleeping position actually say about you ? Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the UK Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service analysed six common sleeping positions - and found that each is linked to a particular personality type. What your sleeping position says about you … Foetus Those who curl up in the foetus position are described as tough on the outside but sensitive at heart. They may be shy when they first meet somebody, but soon relax. This is the most common sleeping position, adopted by 41% of the 1,000 people who took part in the survey. More than twice as many women as men tend to adopt this position. Log Lying on your side with both arms down by your side. These sleepers are easy going, social people who like being part of the in-crowd, and who are trusting of strangers. However, they may be gullible. Yearner People who sleep on their side with both arms out in front are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious, cynical. They are slow to make up their minds, but once they have taken a decision, they are unlikely ever to change it. Soldier Lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They don’t like a fuss, but set themselves and others high standards. Freefall Lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side. Often gregarious and brash people, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath, and don’t like criticism, or extreme situations. Starfish Lying on your back with both arms up around the pillow. These sleepers make good friends because they are always ready to listen to others, and offer help when needed. They generally don’t like to be the centre of attention. The remainder of those in the poll said the position they fell asleep varied or did not know. Professor Idzikowski also examined the effect of various sleeping positions on health. He concluded that the freefall position was good for digestion, while the starfish and soldier positions were more likely to lead to snoring and a bad night’s sleep. Professor Idzikowski said “Lying down flat means that stomach contents can more readily be worked back up into the mouth, while those who lie on their back may end up snoring and breathing less well during the night. “Both these postures may not necessarily awaken the sleeper but could cause a less refreshing night’s sleep.” The research also found that most people are unlikely to change their sleeping position. Just 5% said they sleep in a different position every night.
