The polls have opened in Thailand in a snap election being held three years early. The Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra called the election in an attempt to dispel allegations of corruption and abuse of power. Phil Mercer reports from Bangkok.

Prime Minister Thaksin has called this “judgment day”. The election is effectively a referendum on his leadership after months of political uncertainty. It appears that only an overwhelming show of support from Thailand’s 45 millions voters will ease the crisis. The Prime Minister’s critics have accused him of corruption and the main opposition parties are boycotting the poll in protest. In the past a few months, there’ve been dozens of anti-government rallies. Tens of thousands of people have demonstrated against the leader. They’ve accused of eroding Thailand’s democracy. The Prime Minister has denied the allegations. To his supporters, Thaksin Shinawatra is a champion of the poll, especially in the countryside where he has provided local low-cost healthcare and grants to farmers.
