Shelly Minteer from the University of St. Louis in the United States, found a way to run them on ethanol, alcohol. “We’ve actually run them off of a variety of different alcohol sources. A drink as fantasy it may seem, but it could be made to work. To generate power from alcohol and fuel cell you have to strip off the hydrogen atoms from the ethanol molecules. Usually, for this, scientists and engineers need expensive platinum catalyst. “However with a bio-fuel cell, we were replacing that non-renewable resource --- the platinum --- with an enzyme, and using an enzyme as catalyst.
