The South Korea news agency Yonhap says North Korea has promised military talks with South Korea two days after the North carried out missile tests which drew strong international criticism. But the South Korea Defence Ministry turned down the North’s offer saying the timing was not appropriate. A chief American negotiator on North Korea Christopher Hill is in China to discuss the crisis over the North Korean tests. Daniel Griffiths reports from Beijing.

Christopher Hill is bringing a clear message to Beijing: the US wants China to use its influence in Pyongyang to help resolve the crisis on the Korean peninsular. China is one of the North Korea’s few remaining supporters and a major aid donor to the impoverished regime. So Beijing doesn’t want to put too much pressure on its old ally and it is opposed to tough action like international sanctions. It says dialogue is the only way to resolve the situation and it has called on the US to negotiate directly with North Korea.
