我们知道,学了很多年的英语,掌握英语词汇无数,英语语法使用娴熟,可是似乎还是欠缺点什么,为什么总是有人抱怨听不懂外国人说话呢?又或者是为什么老觉得自己的英文不购地道呢?今天我们就来解决这各问题。
说英语不地道,说白了就是因为我们从书本上学到的都是正式用语,而生活中的口语才是真正沟通中所用到了。而俚语则是非常重要的一部份。俚语在英文里叫slang。我们来看看他的英解:A kind of language occurring chiefly in casual and playful speech, made up typically of short-lived coinages and figures of speech that are deliberately used in place of standard terms for added raciness, humor, irreverence, or other effect. 意思就是俚语主要出现在非正式的、游戏性的话语中的一种语言,基本由存在时间很短的派生词和修辞构成,它们被故意地用来取代标准的词汇以达到生动、幽默、无礼或其它效果。
听起来很复杂吧?是的,俚语的学习是英语学习过程中比较难的一部份。由于特定的文化背景,所以理解起来比较费事。
前段时间,公司请了美国外教给专业英语人员培训英语。想起来也有一段时间了。今天整理了一下笔记,全部是俚语。我用的是上课老师的讲解,结合自己理解用英解写下的每条俚语的涵义,有些因为匆忙,漏记了,在这里大家也可讨论一下。
1. hit the spot = just what you want
2. brush...aside = ignore
3. break a leg = good luck
4. go fly a kite = go way
5. I didn't know what hit me = surprise
6. on the road = traveling
7. I'm in heaven/This is heaven = very happy
8. a walk in the park/a piece of cake = easy
9. a needle in a haystack = difficult to find
10. once in a blue moon= very rarely
11. fat chance = very little chance
12. That's the last straw= can't bear it any more
13. I feel like a million bucks(dollars) = feel great
14. Hit or miss = sometimes great, sometimes terrible, nothing in the middle
15. What a drag! = when something is boring or unpleasant
16. I know it like the back of my hands = know sth. very well
17. dumb as a brick(post) = stupid
18. as exciting as watching paint dry(grass grow) = very boring
19. It was a dream come true = excellent, beyond your imagination
20. Somebody shoot(kill) me = don't want to be there any more/boring
21. put somebody on the spot
22. sitting on pins and needles/walking on eggshells
23. dancing around sth./side-stepping
24. whole hog = put all the effort on
25. pick my brain = brain storming
26. scantily clad = not positive
27. pulling my leg = lie(not angry)
28. doormat/pushover
29. fish out of water
30. roll out of welcome mat = warmly welcome
31. jump on the bandwagon = follow everybody
32. sb. has had it/be fed up = can't bear it anymore
33. run circles around/outperform = better than others
34. leaps and bounds = grow quickly
35. sb is in the driver's seat/wear the pants = control
36. give it(my) all
37. slave-driver/task master
38. skating on thin ice

41. In the bag. = something is already decided
42. Pop the Champagne = celebrate something
43. Nothing to write home about = sth is not very great
44. Penny pincher = stingy, hate to spend money
45. green with envy = envy
46. a steal = cheap
47. barrel of laughs = funny
48. an old hand at something = have a lot of experience
49. wine and dine(v.) = invite to expensive dinner
50. out of mine element = not comfortable, not familiar
