Conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan Drive Up World Refugee Numbers

Launching the report, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugee A.G. said for the second year in the row the number of people fleeing their countries and displaced from their home is on the rise.

"We have, today, eleven point four million refugees worldwide, but we have 26 million of people displaced in the boards of their our countries."

G.says conflicts are largely to blame.Refugees from Iraq and Afghanistan alone make up half the world's total.11.4 million tally does not include the millions of Pakistan living as refugees in the middle east and other areas in the world.

G.describled a band of conflicts and instability fighting, includes mostly in Muslim countries."Now,together with Pakistan, more than half of the group of refugees are concentrated in the same area. That area starts in Afghanistan, include Iran,Pakistan,Sudan, and Somali. And this is an area of great concern for us and I can only ask international community to be more and more involved together, acting together to make sure that these conflicts fined at the end.'

While Afghanistan,Iraq, the Darfur region and Sudan are highly publised "hotspots",UNHCR's G.says many other refugees are created by lesser known conflicts in the and hardships, offen forgotten by the international community.

"Looking only at confidence one continent,Africa, there we have sense been having since the beginning of the year, with people crossing their borders in  big numbers,of in thousands There we are having new arrivals of Darfurians in Chad and Central African Republic,of Chadians in Cameroon, of Central African Republicans in Chad and in Cameroon, of Eritreans in Sudan and in Ethiopia, of Somalis in Yemen, in Kenya, in Djibouti,we have Kenyans crossing the border into Uganda and we are now witnessing the worsening situation in Zimbabwe. Now,this di** demonstrates a trend three that represents a multiplication of crises, with more and more people underneath on the move."

The UN agency says global refugee numbers had fallen for five years before rising again into 2006 and 2007.Well,"conflicts are largely to blame"UNHCR says cliamte change ,the rise of in energy and food prices and ensuring poverty are also factors.

The latest campaign jabs on Iraq come at the end of a week of back and forth volleies volleys on war, which is likely to be a key issue in November election, along with the weakening U.S.economy.

Tom Frick ,of New York Daily News is a frequent guest on VOA's issues on the news program.
"McCain is betting, the American people will be persuaded ultimataely, then
that,no matter how angry the seem to be about what's going on Iraq.We can't afford to lose.I think Obama are taking the position that we won't lose, but we don't need have as many troops there as we do at the monment. And three-quarters of American people opposed to the war in Iraq.I think, that is an issue that works for Obama better than that it does on for McCain."
Iraq and the economy will likely be the focus of the presidential debates later this year, but how many debates are held remains an open question.

Helping Foods Keep Their Cool(2/2)

Place the harvested items on a clean surface or directly into storage containers. Do not put them on the ground.Use clean water to remove dirt, and keep the water clean. Usually it is better not to remove outer leaves from fruits and vegetables before storage. Without the leaves, food can become dry.

Fruits and vegetables must be cool from field heat before they are put into storage. If they are placed in cool water, however, it can spread fungus throughout the food. A better idea is to harvest foods either early or late in the day, then leave them to cool naturally.

Some fruits and vegetables must be stored at zero to four degrees Celsius. Any colder, and they might be damaged. Others need four to eight degrees. And still others must be stored above eight degrees.

Wet the fruits and vegetables so they do not become too dry. The best time to do this is before storage. Cover the items in plastic once they reach the right "critical temperature" for storage. Most fruits and vegetables need the relative humidity in storage to be kept between eighty-five and ninety-five percent. Finally, leave space between the food containers and the walls of the storage area so air can flow. Keep the space clean. And try not to open the doors too often.

UN Human Rights Council Holds Special Session On World Food Crisis(1/2)

The United Nations estimates more than 850 million people worldwide are going hungry, and another two billion are suffering from malnutrition. The World Health Organization says malnutrition in children can cause life-long health problems.

The rights to adequate food and freedom from hunger are enshrined in international law. In calling for this special session, the U.N. Human Rights Council argued that the global food crisis is a massive violation of human rights.

In opening the conference, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour, told delegates the high prices and shortages of food were jeopardizing the well-being and rights of countless people.

"In some regions, natural disasters or misguided policies, or both, compound already severe situations and render them catastrophic for the most discriminated and marginalized populations."

Arbour mentioned no country by name. But, her thoughts reflect the recent catastrophic events in Burma where the government has compounded the tragedy arising from Cyclone Nargis by not allowing enough foreign aid to reach the 2.5 million affected people.

Need Your Appendix Out? Let Me Reach Down Your Throat(1/2)

Medical researchers keep looking for less invasive ways to perform operations. The aim is to cut less and to reduce pain and recovery time. Some researchers see a future in NOTES. NOTES is short for Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery.

In simple terms, what this means is the removal of diseased organs through the body's natural openings. For example, a man in California recently had his appendix removed through his mouth.Twenty-five years ago, having your appendix removed meant staying in the hospital for as long as a week. Patients returned home with an ugly and permanent scar on their abdomen.

But since the late nineteen eighties, laparoscopic surgery has gained popularity. It leaves only small marks where holes were made in the skin. The doctor works with a system called a laparoscope, usually connected to a video camera. Laparoscopic surgery rarely requires a hospital stay.

With the newest kind of surgery, doctors make a small cut in the patient's belly button. A camera is placed through the hole to help guide the surgical instrument.
