A Thoughtful Gift
A man went to Africa on a tour, and decided to buy a present for his friend in America. But everything was too expensive for him, just like at every tourist spot.
So he bought a broken vase that cost almost nothing.
He gave the address of his friend in America to the shopkeeper and asked the shop to wrap the vase and send it to that address.
He thought that his friend might think that the vase was broken in the mail and would not blame him for being stingy.When he got home, he received a thank-you letter from his friend. The letter said: "Thank you very much for the broken vase. It was very thoughtful of you to wrap every broken piece in a sheet of paper."

一、【bring home the bacon】养家糊口/获胜而归

【来源】:
The origin of the expression "bringing home the bacon" is uncertain.
It might come from the English custom, which originated in the 12th century,
of giving a young couple bacon if they were still happy after a year of marriage.
Maybe it comes from the 'greased pig' competition at fairs,
the winner bringing home the bacon (the pig).
Or maybe bacon is meant to represent all food, since it is very ancient,
having been a favorite of the early Romans and Greeks.
这个习语的来源有很多说法。有人说它可能来源于12世纪英国的一个习俗，就是送给在结婚一年后仍然相亲相爱的夫妻熏肉（bacon）。也有可能它来源于从前英国农村集市上举行的一种很有趣的体育比赛，即给小猪全身涂上油脂，弄得浑身滑滑的，然后放开它，让参加比赛者去追捕。谁能捉住这只猪，谁就赢了。按照惯例，他就可以把这只小猪带回家去享用。或者bacon是用来代表所有的食物，只不过很古老了，是早期罗马和希腊人的最爱。

因为啊他们辛辛苦苦的种庄稼,这一年到头就怕闹蝗灾了.要是真是如此,那可是[pour water into a sieve]竹篮打水一场空啊.
