J. Jeffrey Heck, a lawyer in Mansfield, Ohio, usually sits on management’s side of the table. “The only employee cases I take are those that poke my buttons(触痛),” he said. “And this one really did.”

As Google whips(suddenly move) out its fat wallet to buy the video site YouTube, it is making Yahoo look even more out of step with the fast-changing Internet advertising market.
Yahoo itself tried to buy YouTube just a few weeks ago and got as close as negotiating(to discuss with another or others in order to come to terms or reach an agreement) price and terms, according to an executive briefed(abstract) on the discussions. But the talks broke down, and Google swooped in(to suddenly move in) and closed the deal quickly, just as it has in several recent partnership negotiations. Yahoo would seem to have a strong hand. It is the world’s most popular Web site, with more than 400 million monthly users and a major seller of advertising for its own and other sites. It has top Web properties(characteristics) in areas like e-mail messaging and music. And its management team, led by Terry S. Semel, a former Hollywood executive, is well regarded for its skill and financial rigor(strictness;severity).
But in recent months the company has suffered some embarrassing(to face difficulties)setbacks(挫折) in its sales of both display and Web search advertising. Many advertising industry executives say Yahoo’s lead in working with big marketers has eroded as other companies have built up popular Web sites, sales operations and advertising technology.
“Yahoo has lost the favor it enjoyed a year or two ago,” said David Cohen, a senior vice president of Universal McCann, a media buying agency of the Interpublic Group. He said his clients(customs) were reducing the share of their budgets(预算) they allocate(to set apart;designate) to Yahoo in favor of newer sites, like MySpace, and sites developed by big media companies like Viacom.
“There are more players in town, and the others are closing the gap relative to the things Yahoo is good at,” Mr. Cohen said.

The House on Autopilot

WHEN the sun rises outside Rich Bowen’s house, the lights go on in his fish tank. A light sensor(传感器) sends a signal to his computer, which relays(transfer) it through the house’s electrical wires to the fish tank light. Mr. Bowen, a programmer who lives in Lexington, Ky., calls the trick “kind of silly(foolish), but fun.”
The rest of Mr. Bowen’s home automation(automatic operation) project is aimed at humans. When he sits down to watch a movie, he pushes a button on his remote, which activates a program that dims(to make faint使暗淡) the lights in the room to 30 percent and shuts off the other lights in his house.
Home automation projects like this are becoming more common and more powerful. Living With Love, Chaos and Haley

Housing developers are drastically cutting prices to move a backlog of unsold homes off the market, new statistics from the Commerce Department suggest. The median sale price of a new home in September 2006 was $217,000, 9.7 percent lower than in September 2005, the report said — the steepest year-to-year drop in more than three decades.
The lower prices evidently had the desired effect: the number of new homes sold jumped by 5.3 percent in September compared with August, and inventories fell by 2 percent.

BAGHDAD, Nov. 5 — Three and a half years after American troops captured Baghdad and ended the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi court set up to judge the brutalities of his 24 years in power found him guilty on Sunday of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to death by hanging. Help Iraq Help Itself
In recent days, Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki of Iraq has made public his disagreement with the dictates and tactics of the United States, including its proposed benchmarks for progress and the presence of military checkpoints around Sadr City.

In a rare move, Microsoft said yesterday that it had agreed to pay a percentage of the sales of its new portable media player to the Universal Music Group.

Late Use of Heart Stents May Not Help, Study Says

Opening a blocked artery with balloons and stents can be lifesaving in the early hours after a heart attack, but a new study concludes that it often does no good if the heart attack occurred more than 25 hours ago.

The researchers say that doctors should stop trying to open arteries in people who had heart attacks days or weeks ago and who are stable and free of chest pain. Currently, the balloon procedure, called angioplasty, is often used in those patients, along with stents, devices that are implanted to prop an artery open.

About a million angioplasties a year are performed in the United States, some in heart attack victims and some in people with blocked arteries who have not had heart attacks.

Dr. Hochman emphasized that angioplasty is still，the best treatment for many heart-attack patients who get to the hospital early, within 12 hours of the onset of the attack.(2)For them, opening a clogged artery — “early angioplasty” — can restore blood flow and reduce damage to the heart muscle. After 12 hours, however, it is too late to save the muscle.

Heat Wave Was a Factor in 100 Deaths, New York Says

Last summer’s brutal heat wave killed or contributed to the death of about 100 people in New York City, far more than previously reported, and it may have been the deadliest in decades, according to a new analysis by the city health department.

The city has long counted the number of deaths caused directly by heat stroke, and city officials say that heat stroke claimed 40 lives in early August, the most in any heat wave since 1952.

In addition to tallying those deaths, officials at the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said that for the first time they also calculated the number of “excess deaths” — that is, how many more deaths occurred during the heat wave than would be expected during ordinary summer weather. Since the 1990’s, other cities like Chicago have made that calculation, because it can provide a more complete picture of heat-related deaths.

Health officials looked back at death records during killer heat waves in 2001, 2002 and 2005, and found similar increases in death rates, but the tolls were smaller because those hot spells were shorter.

During the heat wave, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and other officials repeatedly warned of the danger, opened air-conditioned community centers and urged people to seek shelter in cooler places. But Deputy Commissioner Lorna Thorpe said the high death toll suggested that “public education messages do need to be ramped up,” especially about the importance of air-conditioning.

An aging population and more diligent efforts to identify cases of heat stroke may have contributed to the relatively high count, Dr. Frieden said. It is also possible, officials said, that some people had already been weakened by a shorter, less severe heat wave in July.

Among the heat stroke victims, just two were known to have working air-conditioning, two-thirds had cardiovascular disease, many had psychiatric conditions or diabetes, and most were over age 65 — all findings consistent with studies on previous heat waves. Fewer than half lived alone, which was something of a surprise, because that has been shown in other places to be a risk factor in heat deaths.

Schools Slow in Closing Gaps Between Races

My friend Jason Munzke and I had come a long way for this, a couple hundred miles up Highway 95 from Idaho to Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park in British Columbia, looking for what some call the best backcountry ski terrain in North America. “Anything past Kicking Horse, that’s new territory for me,” said Munzke as we sped toward the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

Hoping to prevent Congress from letting the government negotiate lower drug prices for millions of older Americans on Medicare, the pharmaceutical companies have been recruiting Democratic lobbyists, lining up allies in the Bush administration and Congress, and renewing ties with organizations of patients who depend on brand-name drugs.

Ms. Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, is in line to become speaker in January and has said that the House will immediately take up legislation authorizing Medicare to negotiate prices with drug manufacturers.

Amgen is also seeking strategic advice from the Glover Park Group, a consulting firm whose founders include Joe Lockhart, a former press secretary for President Bill Clinton.

Other major drug companies have been snatching up Democratic former-aides-turned-lobbyists. Merck recently has hired Peter Rubin, a former aide to Representative Jim McDermott of Washington, one of the more liberal House Democrats. Cephalon has hired Kim Zimmerman, a health policy aide to Senator Ben Nelson, a conservative Democrat of Nebraska.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization has retained Paul T. Kim, a former aide to two influential Democrats, Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and Representative Henry A. Waxman of California.
