This is AP News Minute.
I. Hundreds of people are injured after three tornados touched down in central and southern Virginia. The twister also destroyed property and left about 9000 customers without power. The governor has declared a state of emergency in southeast Virginia.
II. House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers traveled to New York on Monday for a meeting with Sean Bell’s family. The congressmen also visited the scene of the shooting where Bell who was unarmed was gunned down by three police officers. Civil rights activists are calling up the justice department to pursue federal charges.
III. Firefighters in Southern California continue to battle wild fires. The flames have come dangerously close to homes at the foot of San Gabriel Mountains. At least 1000 people have been forced to leave their homes.
IV. Truck drivers converged on Capitol Hill to protest high gas prices. The truckers say congress should stop subsidizing big oil companies and tap into this strategic Petroleum reserve to provide some relief.
