This is AP News Minute.
I. Forecasters say the Mississippi will crest in some areas later this week. In the meantime, many river towns are reinforcing levees in a final push to hold off any fresh flooding. In Winfield, Missouri more than 100 homes and three thousand acres of farmland are in danger if the levees fail.
II. Divers have reached the capsized ferry in the Philippines and no survivor has been found. It’s estimated 800 people were aboard when the ferry flipped over during a typhoon. Only 38 people are known to have survived.
III. The Federal Reserve begins a two-day-meeting today. It’s expected the Fed will keep interest rate the same. Central Bank is caught in a bind between concerns over a sluggish economy and rising prices.
IV. Don Imus says it was just a sarcastic remark to make the point that officials are picking on NFL player Pacmam Jones because he is black. The radio talk show host this morning says he meant nothing racial against the often arrested Dallas Cowboys player yesterday when he asked his sports guy what color is Jones? The answer African-American. Imus said there you go, now we know.
