Is Marathoning Too Much of a Good Thing for Your Heart?

Is Marathoning Too Much of a Good Thing for Your Heart?

HE had not expected to spend his 60th birthday in a hospital cardiac unit. R. J. Turner, a commercial real estate broker from Frederick County, Va., had planned a robust celebration. “I was going to finish my 10th marathon,” Mr. Turner said, “which isn’t bad for a guy my age.”

But near the start of the Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 29, Mr. Turner raised an arm to wave at bystanders, and “everything went black.” Collapsing violently, he gashed his head, chipped a tooth and bit a deep hole in his bottom lip.

Mr. Turner, who had passed a stress test a year before, had just had a heart attack.

This has been an unusual season for the cardiac health of marathoners. After years in which almost no deaths were attributed to heart attacks at this country’s major marathons, at least six runners have died in 2006.

Two police officers, one 53, the other 60, died of heart attacks at the Los Angeles Marathon in March. The hearts of three runners in their early 40s gave out during marathons in Chicago in October, San Francisco in July and the Twin Cities in October. And at the same marathon where Mr. Turner was felled, another man, 56, crumpled near the 17th mile, never to recover.

What It Takes to Make a Student

What It Takes to Make a Student

On the morning of Oct. 5, President Bush and his education secretary, Margaret Spellings, paid a visit, along with camera crews from CNN and Fox News, to Friendship-Woodridge Elementary and Middle Campus, a Elementary and Middle in Washington. The president dropped in on two classrooms, where he asked the students, almost all of whom were African-American and poor, if they were planning to go to college. Every hand went up. “See, that’s a good sign,” the president told the students when they assembled later in the gym. “Going to college is an important goal for the future of the United States of America.” He singled out one student, a black eighth grader named Asia Goode, who came to Woodridge four years earlier reading “well below grade level.” But things had changed for Asia, according to the president. “Her teachers stayed after school to tutor her, and she caught up,” he said. “Asia is now an honors student. She loves reading, and she sings in the school choir.”

Sex won't kill you.
Sex won't kill you. Crack will
Contrary to movie mythology, having sex doesn't increase your chances of a heart attack, but snorting cocaine lifts the risk of seizure more than 20-fold.
A new Australian study is the first to analyse all known triggers for heart attacks, including sexual activity, cocaine use, pollution, heavy meals, and stressful major events like terrorist attacks.
Researcher Dr Geoffrey Tofler said traditional long-term approaches to heart attack prevention, like diet and exercise regimes and medication, are important but they often ignore other brief triggers.
These external pressures - such as sudden severe stress or physical exertion - can be a factor in up to 40 per cent of heart attacks.
"We know, for example, that the incidence of heart attacks rises sharply in the days after people are exposed to major events such as an earthquake or a September 11," he said.
Having sex, however, causes very little increased risk of heart attack whereas cocaine use boosts the likelihood 20 times.
"If individuals know what the relative risks are they will be better able to manage their own health accordingly," he said.
Further research will address questions such as whether, during a highly stressful event such as the last minutes of a close football final, people at risk would benefit from added medicine to prevent blood clots, fast heart rate and raised blood pressure that could increase the risk of a heart attack.

Hubble reveals decade of wonders

Hubble reveals decade of wonders

After it was launched in 1990, the Hubble space telescope, a $1.5 billion orbiting observatory, was found to have a glitch in its giant lens -- rendering Earth's first orbital observatory short-sighted.

But after an audacious Shuttle repair mission, when Hubble was fixed with what is effectively a pair of eyeglasses to correct its sight, the telescope has returned some of the most stunning images ever captured by science.

And now astronomers have voted for the best pictures taken by Hubble in its 16 years in orbit.

Hubble's Top 10 illustrate that our universe is not only strange, but also impossibly beautiful.

It transmits about 120 gigabytes of information every week. That's equal to about 1100m of books on a shelf.

By putting a telescope into space, astronomers can get views of distant objects without having to look through Earth's thick atmosphere.

Henry Lambright, science and technology professor at Syracuse University, New York, says: "The beautiful pictures that we see Hubble produce are gripping to everyone who looks at them. They transmit the magic of space in a way that words cannot."

President Bush is showing support for the government of Indonesia, the nation with the world's largest Muslim population and a key ally in the war on terror. During the six-hour visit to the hill town of Bogor, Mr. Bush conferred with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

They met Monday in a presidential palace in Bogor - a scenic town about 60 kilometers from Jakarta. The talks ended with words of cooperation from the American and Indonesian leaders. But the warm welcome Mr. Bush got at the presidential palace was not matched in the streets of Indonesia. In Bogor and elsewhere, there were protests against the presidential visit.

Indonesia is a country with a democratic government, and practices a mostly moderate form of Islam. But there is anger here over U.S. policy in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a perceived American bias in favor of Israel. President Bush has been portrayed by some here as anti-Islam.

More than 200 Chinese nationals will be airlifted from trouble-torn Tonga on a chartered plane Thursday, sources with the Chinese Embassy in the Pacific island-state said.

Hundreds of Chinese made their way to Tonga's neighbouring country Fiji Wednesday to board an Air China aircraft sent by Beijing yesterday.

Riots triggered by a disputed parliamentary reform move broke out in Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa last week, in which eight people were reportedly killed and 80 per cent of the central business district destroyed. About 30 Chinese-run stores were looted or burned down.

According to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu, about 300 overseas Chinese, mostly the elderly, women and children, had sought refuge at the local embassy after their homes and business were destroyed.

India and China Become Friendlier Rivals
India and China Become Friendlier Rivals

NEW DELHI, Nov. 20 — A 40-year border dispute remains unresolved. Tibetan refugees continue to pour across the Himalayas. The memory of India’s bruising military defeat by China in 1962 remains fresh in the minds of a certain generation.

But as the president of China, Hu Jintao, arrived here Monday night to shore up relations between his nation and India, the territorial disputes were no longer the main focus of their relationship.

As India and China tend to their flourishing economies and strive to expand their global reach, they increasingly find themselves scrambling for natural resources and political influence around the world. At times these two giants of Asia appear to be linking arms; at times they are in active competition.

But it is not exactly a relationship of equals. India lags behind on virtually every indicator, with the notable exceptions of the size of its software industry and the number of billionaires, in which it is far ahead.

Seaweed farming

Seaweeds are marine algae: saltwater-dwelling, simple organisms that fall into the rather outdated general category of "plants". Most of them are the green (1200 species), brown (2200 species) or red (6500 species) kinds。

Development of alternative livelihoods has become a popular policy to uplift the socio-economic status of small-scale fishers and to reduce fishing pressure on overexploited fisheries. Seaweed farming has been incorporated into many community-based coastal resources management projects and fisheries management initiatives as an alternative livelihood option for fishers in tropical developing countries. This is typically based on several assumptions, either unstated or explicit, of program designers, project managers senior policy makers.

Websites make donations easy
Reading newspaper articles about tragedies and in Africa made Elizabeth Stein, editor in chief of the student newspaper at Hunter College in New York City, want to cry. With literally only $1 in her checking account, Ms. Stein felt helpless about addressing the issues of hunger on the continent.

But then she discovered The Hunger Site (www.thehungersite.com), one of several websites where people can make a donation to a charity without spending a dime. The "it's free" tab is a welcome sign for Americans like Stein, whose hearts happen to be bigger than their wallets. "I love that I can help someone for free," she says.

Launched in 1999 and operated with five other similar sites by CharityUSA based in Seattle, The Hunger Site raises money for charities through sponsors whose ads appear after visitors click on certain links. After The Hunger Site became hugely successful, CharityUSA opened other sites, including The Breast Cancer Site and The Animal Site. CharityUSA sites primarily do not advertise their sites, but President Tim Kunin says they sometimes use Google ads to promote products the site sells to raise additional money for charities.

Chronic fatigue not just for women

Women are no more likely to get chronic fatigue syndrome than men, nor are neurotic types more prone, according to new myth-debunking Australian research.
Scientists from the University of Sydney and the University of NSW have discovered who is most likely to get the debilitating condition and it has nothing to do with age, sex, personality traits or mental health as many people thought.
Chronic fatigue syndrome is most commonly triggered by an acute illness, like glandular fever, and it is the severity of this illness that decides whether you will develop the syndrome, the research found.
Of the first 253 people investigated, about 10 per cent developed chronic fatigue, a state affecting 100,000 Australians only diagnosed when the disabling tiredness persists for more than six months.
In these people, the acute infection has a hit and run effect on the brain that takes some time to repair.

Vocabulary and Success

Your boss has a bigger vocabulary than you have. That's one good reason why he's your boss.

This discovery has been made in the word laboratories of the world. Not by theoretical English professors, but by practical, hard-headed scholars who have been searching for the secrets of success.

After a host of experiments and years of testing they have found out:

That if your vocabulary is limited your chances of success are limited.

That one of the easiest and quickest ways to get ahead is by consciously building up your knowledge of words. That the vocabulary of the average person almost stops growing by the middle twenties. And that from then on it is necessary to have an intelligent plan if progress is to be made. No haphazard hit-or-miss methods will do.

It has long since been satisfactorily established that a high executive does not have a large vocabulary merely because of the opportunities of his position. That would be putting the cart before the horse. Quite the reverse is true. His skill in words was a tremendous help in getting him his job.

Dr.Johnson O'Connor of tree Human Engineering Laboratory of Boston and of the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, gave a vocabulary test to 100 young men who were studying to be industrial executives.Five years later those who had passed in the upper ten percent all., without exception, had executive positions, while not a single young man of the lower twenty-five per cent had become an executive.

hard-headed 头脑清醒 讲究/讲求实际 a host of sth 大量/许多
haphazard 无计划/随意  put the cart before the house 本末倒置

China VS US 中美对抗

Asians see the United States losing its undisputed international influence in 50 years to possibly China amid waning trust in Washington to act responsibly in the world, a poll showed. The study is carried out by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs(CCGA), AN Independent US think tank.

In the immediate term, US power in the eyes of Asians remains secure.

In half a century, however, a majority in all countries covered by the poll - China,India,South Korea and the United States - believed " another nation" will become as powerful of surpass the United States in power.

"There is a clear agreement across the board that over the next half century Asians see the United States no more the sole superpower that it is or considered to be today," CCGA president Marshall Bouton told a news conference in Washington.

The survey did not specify in its questions which nation people believe will match or overtake the United States.

"We can only infer what nation people had in mind when they answered that question," Bouton said. When asked whether it was China, he said " I guess so."

China has become a global manufacturing power and is already displacing the United States as the primary trading partner for many nations.

China has also amassed the world's largest trade surplus and world's largest foreign exchange reserves.

Asians, according to the survey, were quite comfortable with the rise of China.

Fair trading advice to businesses

 Fair trading advice to businesses

Businesses are enouraged to deal with all consumers. However, if it is apparent that a potential customer may not have the capacity to make a voluntary or informed decision about the implications and/or benefits of their purchasing or contractual decisons, then businesses need to act responsibly and take extra care in their dealings to enfure that no unfair advantage is taken. Businesses that take advantage of vulnerable of disadvantaged consumers get a bad reputation.

What do we mean by 'disadvantaged or vulnerable'?

Some consumers may be disadvantaged or volunerable in some marketplace situations if they:

have a low income
低收入
are from a non-English speaking background
have a disability -- intellectual, phychiatric, physical, sensory, neurological or a learning disability

have a serious or chronic illness
have poor reading, writing and numerical skills
are homeless
are very young
are old
come from a remote area
have an indigenous background

Of course, not all consumers with these characteristics are more at risk of poor business practices. But be aware that your marketing message and conduct may effect some consumers differently when making decisions abut buying goods or services.

It is also important to note, however, that busines should continue to contract or do business with consumers who may experience a disadvantage or vulnerablity, as a refusal to deal will not be in any party's interests, and may be in danger of breaching anti-discrimination legislation.

The White House national security adviser says in Vietnam, both at the APEC summit and in his official meetings with Vietnamese officials, Mr. Bush will talk about economic challenges and the dynamics of change. This visit comes just days after Vietnam learned it would be admitted to the World Trade Organization, and the president is expected to emphasize the need for greater economic reforms and trade liberalization.

Hadley says APEC leaders meeting on the sidelines of the summit are also likely to discuss regional security issues - most notably, North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

"The president will seek to reaffirm the centrality of the freedom agenda in Asia, continue to encourage efforts in the war on terror, and communicate his vision for smart development based on the Millennium Challenge principles of good governance, investment in people, and economic freedom."

Security is expected to be tight during the president's trip, particularly in Indonesia. On Saturday, a bomb exploded at an American fast food restaurant in Jakarta, injuring one person. When asked about the incident, White House officials said only that the president was invited by the government of Indonesia and the visit would not be canceled.

The coach stood on the sidelines shouting to his players.(教练站在界外向他的运动员们吆喝。)

She was sidelined with an ankle injury.(她因脚踝受伤而不能参加比赛。)

这里所用的短语是"on the sidelines of",  应指除"summit" 以外的会议

Transmission and Reception of Radio Waves

For the propagation and interception of radio waves, a transmitter and receiver are employed. A radio wave acts as a carrier of information-bearing signals; the information may be encoded directly on the wave by periodically interrupting its transmission (as in dot-and-dash telegraphy) or impressed on it by a process called modulation. The actual information in a modulated signal is contained in its sidebands, or frequencies added to the carrier wave, rather than in the carrier wave itself. The two most common types of modulation used in radio are amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM). Frequency modulation minimizes noise and provides greater fidelity than amplitude modulation, which is the older method of broadcasting. Both AM and FM are analog transmission systems, that is, they process sounds into continuously varying patterns of electrical signals which resemble sound waves. Digital radio uses a transmission system in which the signals propagate as discrete voltage pulses, that is, as patterns of numbers; before transmission, an analog audio signal is converted into a digital signal, which may be transmitted in the AM or FM frequency range. A digital radio broadcast offers compact-disc-quality reception and reproduction on the FM band and FM-quality reception and reproduction on the AM band.

In its most common form, radio is used for the transmission of sounds (voice and music) and pictures (television). The sounds and images are converted into electrical signals by a microphone (sounds) or video camera (images), amplified, and used to modulate a carrier wave that has been generated by an oscillator circuit in a transmitter. The modulated carrier is also amplified, then applied to an antenna that converts the electrical signals to electromagnetic waves for radiation into space. Such waves radiate at the speed of light and are transmitted not only by line of sight but also by deflection from the ionosphere.

Receiving antennas intercept part of this radiation, change it back to the form of electrical signals, and feed it to a receiver.

There are certain differences between AM and FM receivers. In an AM transmission the carrier wave is constant in frequency and varies in amplitude (strength) according to the sounds present at the microphone; in FM the carrier is constant in amplitude and varies in frequency. Because the noise that affects radio signals is partly, but not completely, manifested in amplitude variations, wideband FM receivers are inherently less sensitive to noise. In an FM receiver, the limiter and discriminator stages are circuits that respond solely to changes in frequency. The other stages of the FM receiver are similar to those of the AM receiver but require more care in design and assembly to make full use of FM's advantages. FM is also used in television sound systems. In both radio and television receivers, once the basic signals have been separated from the carrier wave they are fed to a loudspeaker or a display device (usually a cathode-ray tube), where they are converted into sound and visual images, respectively.

Foreign banks operating in China will have to incorporate within the country to offer bank cards and mass-market banking services in yuan, less than a month before the industry fully opens, according to new rules issued by Chinese regulators on Wednesday. The rules will take effect on December 11.

Overseas lenders that don't incorporate locally must set aside two times as much capital, or 200 million yuan (US$25.4 million), as those that do, according to rules released November 15 on the Chinese central government's Web site. They also can't issue bank cards and can take only large deposits, limiting their ability to amass funds and grow through lending.

Song Dahan, deputy director of the Legislative Affairs Office of China's State Council, said the regulations will protect the interests of depositors, and give the same treatment to both Chinese and foreign-funded banks.

"Both Chinese and foreign-funded banks are required to be registered in China and locally incorporated so as to conduct the Renminbi service," he said on Thursday at a press conference in Beijing.

Middle Class

I must define what I mean when I use the expression "middle class."

Let me first define it by exclusion. I exclude at one end of the scale the rich and powerful: those who control great funds and enterprises, and are as a rule able to protect themselves. In most material diffculties, the rich can look after themselves.

I exclude at the other end of the scale the mass of unskilled people, almost invariably well-organised, and with their wages and conditions safeguarded by popular law. What I am excluding them from is my definition of the middle class. We cannot exclude them from problem of social progress, for one of the prime objects of modern social and political policy is to give them a proper measure of security, and provide the conditions which will enable them to acquire skill and knowledge and individually.

These exclusions being made, I include the intervening range -- salary-earners, shoppers, skilled artisans, professional men and women, farmers and so on. These are, in the political and economic sense, the middle class. They are for the most part unorganised and unself-conscious.They are envied by those whose benefits are largely obtained by taxing them. They are not rich enough to have individual power. They are taken for granted by each political party in turn. They are not sufficiently lacking in individualism to be organised for what in these days we call "pressure politics." And yet, as I have said, they are the backbone of the nation.

take sb for grant 忽视    and yet 然而
